Despite its severe challenges as a desert Southwest city with a model of suburban sprawl, rising temperatures, and limited water, Phoenix has engaged neighborhoods, artists, and other civic groups in moving towards sustainability in recent years. Its recent city plan updates contain a full array of sustainable city components, from green building to complete streets, open space to healthy neighborhoods, urban forestry to farmers’ markets. State and immigration politics, however, severely constrain options further.
