Our Goals
- Provide a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere in which students of all ethnicities, abilities, choices, and backgrounds can challenge themselves to explore new ideas and find their own answers to compelling questions.
- Introduce new topics to students at a formative time in their career, without requiring prior experience in the subject area.
- Fill gaps in the conventional curriculum.
- Contemporize education by teaching timely, situational topics in a small class setting (twenty or fewer students).
- Engage students in shaping their own education.
- Foster meaningful dialogue between students and faculty.
Our Learning Objectives
Upon completion of an Experimental College course, students have shown that they are able to:
1) Take an active role in designing their education by choosing elective course(s) that bridge the academic and the professional worlds.
2) Gather original information from primary literature or performances and creative works.
3) Develop active learning skills: participating in class discussions, working in groups, presenting their work to the class, and evaluating creative works.
4) Develop written and verbal communication skills directed to a course topic.
5) Take ownership of their education by providing mid-semester reviews that guide course improvements during the semester.
6) Make creative contributions to a field of inquiry, often extending out into the community.
7) Develop continuous learning, understand the advances and trends of a field, and take knowledge of the field forward.
