Course Materials and Readings

The most accessible and affordable alternative (for students and instructors alike) to textbooks and other required content is to upload course materials onto your course’s Canvas site. Having readings available on Canvas for students to download, examine/annotate, and print on their own is highly recommended.

The ExCollege office has some scanning capabilities to facilitate creating PDFs for posting on Canvas. However, we strongly encourage you to utilize the resources below at Tisch Library. Their team is also well equipped to help you navigate copyright policies for educational purposes.

COPYING, SCANNING, AND SOURCING COURSE MATERIALS

Tisch Library has a variety of useful resources for digital and print media:

Reserving course materials:

    • Physical documents/books and digital resources may be placed in the reserves for students to access on Canvas or at the library.
    • Films, music, and other streaming media can be added to your Canvas site by submitting a request to tischstreamingmedia@tufts.edu.
    • Tisch also offers Open Education Resources that can be linked to Canvas.

Copiers, scanners, and printers:

    • Several self-service stations are available, as well as services provided by library staff
    • High-quality scans of books and other materials can be requested here. These scans can have selectable/OCR text.
    • Students and faculty alike have access to these machines using their Tufts ID card. Files may be uploaded for printing at access.tufts.edu/jumboprint and then printed by swiping your card at your desired location. Be aware that printing, unlike scanning, must be paid for using JumboCash (funds linked to your ID card).

Digital Design Studio:

    • The Digital Design Studio (DDS) is a self-service, creative space for the production of digital class projects and the exploration of digital media. The DDS can help you and your students get started with data graphics, digital stories, poster making, and video projects.
    • Resources include: multimedia workstations with Mac computers, large-format printers for posters, audio recording rooms, a 3D printer, and more.

The Campus Bookstore can also sell textbooks for students if instructors request them, though we often find that students use online vendors.

FOR INCIDENTAL COPYING

The ExCollege office can handle small copying jobs, but a few days notice is preferred. Please plan ahead and try to avoid running into our office at the end of the workday to have a job copied for your class that evening. There are also printers and scanners available at many buildings around campus, accessible using your Tufts ID card. Log in and upload your document to jumboprint.tufts.edu and swipe on the printer of your choice to print. This service is also available to students.

FOR LARGE FORMAT PRINTS

Prints requiring larger than letter-sized paper may be done in the ExCollege Makerspace or the Digital Design Studio. We have quality photo and 17” roll paper at the ExCollege. The DDS’ services are not free but it is staffed with experts and may be better for specialized or especially large printing needs.

If you decide to use the ExCollege’s printers, large or small, please give us advanced notice so we may be able to better accommodate your request. For the DDS, please see their website.

If your printing needs are not addressed here, please contact the ExCollege.
