On September 13th Tufts new Nolop makerspace was full of more than fifty students who were there to get introduced to Tufts MAKE, Tufts University’s student makers club. Student leaders Jake Sorscher and Jeremy Kanovsky hosted the session to let students know about the club’s mission and resources, and introduce them to some of its current projects.
As Jake and Jeremy put it, Tufts MAKE is focused around:
- making things
- building culture
- trying new things
- supporting as many students as possible
Students learned about resources available to them in the form of people who can teach them maker skills, supplies for fabrication, and money to support individual or collaborative projects. To request project funding students can fill out this Google form. And if students have an idea for a larger-scale, longer-term project which might be a candidate for Tufts MAKE’s incubator program, they can email Jake or Jeremy to learn more about incubator funding.
Makerspace manager and mechanical engineering faculty member Brandon Stafford stopped by the session to say hello and left students with this encouraging message: “Please come here and build stuff, that’s what this place is for”.
Jake and Jeremy also invited a few students to share brief updates on current maker-related projects in biomechanics, brain-computing interfaces, soft-robotics, and the Design for Social Good group.
Tufts MAKE has multiple ways for students to get involved with the club. Their main place for communication, discussion and sharing information about upcoming workshops and events is through their Slack channel. Other ways of connecting are via Tufts MAKE’s Facebook Page, and by contacting Jake or Jeremy.
