Archive / Photography Intern

The intern documents work all of MASS MoCA’s visual and performing arts programs, as well as support programs — education activities, art fabrication, studio residencies, development events and the overall vibrancy of our bustling 16-acre, 28-building campus. The intern organizes current and archive material within an online digital assets management system. In addition to comfort shooting still images, the intern should have significant experience in recording moving images and editing video with Final Cut Pro X. The intern will also contribute to the museum’s social media platforms. A driver’s license might be helpful, but is not required.
Education: Public Engagement Intern
Summer education interns focus on public engagement during the museum’s peak visitation season. This experiential summer internship is an opportunity for current or recently graduated college students who want to explore the dynamic, fast-paced world of museum education. Practical experience is gained through interactions with the public by conducting conversational-style tours in the main galleries, serving at the Information Desk, and managing public hours in Kidspace to help visitors explore the exhibition and create their own works of art at the drop-in ArtBar. Interns help with planning and implementing public programs and private group tours as needed. Interns are assigned specific projects that may include preparing materials for education programs, writing tour guide information packets, and conducting research on artists and other public engagement programs. Successful candidates should be self-sufficient, have an eye for detail, strong oral, writing, and research skills, an enthusiasm for public speaking, and strong customer service skills. They should be able to learn quickly and be confident in their abilities to take on “trial by fire” challenges. Preference is given to candidates with museum / art education experience. Weekend hours required. A driver’s license might be helpful, but is not required.
Graphic Design Intern
Intern assists in day-to-day tasks of MASS MoCA’s in-house design studio, both digital and physical, working closely with the design, curatorial and marketing departments. Working directly with the Senior Designer and Junior Designer, this position is 1/3 graphic designer, 1/3 production artist, and 1/3 jack- of-all-trades. Projects include (but are not limited to) production and installation of vinyl exhibition graphics and wayfinding signage, weekly advertisement and poster design, vendor contact, upkeep of website components, and general studio tasks. Intern should demonstrate enthusiasm, stamina, good attention to detail, and willingness to work with a team. Excellent knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) required. A driver’s license might be helpful, but is not required.
Visual Arts Intern (Registrarial)
Interns assist in the day-to-day operations of a busy curatorial department and help with the preparations for upcoming programs as well as the maintenance of current exhibitions. This position is primarily focused on registrarial duties, including the maintenance of checklists and databases, preparation of loan requests, and assisting with condition reports. Responsibilities may also include research, correspondence with lenders and artists, assistance in the procuring of exhibition materials, installation of A/V equipment and lighting, and assisting in preparation, fabrication, and installation of artworks as needed. Interns will also work with the Education department, receiving training to give regular tours of exhibitions, interact with museum visitors, and develop focused “spotlight” talks on topics of special interest. This is a crucial part of the internship experience. The successful candidate should be detail-oriented, have good written and verbal communication skills, and have a positive attitude about performing many kinds of tasks on a demanding schedule. Must have driver’s’ license and be willing to do a fair amount of driving.
Visual Arts Intern (Curatorial)
Interns assist in the day-to-day operations of a busy curatorial department and help with the preparations for upcoming programs as well as the maintenance of current exhibitions. Responsibilities may include administrative duties, research, writing, and any number of unexpected errands or jobs required to help maintain an ambitious exhibition program of contemporary art. Interns will also work with the Education department, receiving training to give regular tours of exhibitions, interact with museum visitors, and develop focused “spotlight” talks on topics of special interest. This is a crucial part of the internship experience. The successful candidate should be self sufficient, have an eye for detail, strong writing and research skills, and a positive attitude about performing many kinds of tasks on a demanding schedule. Must have driver’s’ license and be willing to do a fair amount of driving.
Performing Arts Administration Intern

Intern works directly with the Managing Director of Performing Arts in the coordination of current and future season planning, general office work, and maintaining and updating all performing arts files, databases, and calendars. The intern will alternate between the Assistant to the Managing Director and Company Manager with drafting event programs, researching upcoming artists, assisting with front of house operations as well as with artist services to arrange transportation and housing logistics of visiting artists, staff, and fellow interns. You are required to have a valid US driver’s license. Intern works weekly performances in addition to supporting long-term residencies (Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival), large-scale events (The National), and aiding in preparatory work for September’s FreshGrass Festival. You are required to have a driver’s license.
Stage Tech / Performing Arts Production
Interns work with the Production Coordinator, Master Carpenter, Master Electrician, House Sound Engineer, and house crew on all aspects of technical theatre, music, and films. This includes hands-on in all of the following areas – carpentry, lighting, sound, audio/visual, and running crew. During the summer, there will be a full load in/out of The National, and 3 week residency with Bang on a Can Summer Music Institute, and 2 week long residency with Room Full of Teeth. You are not required to have a driver’s license.
Communications Intern

The interns work on all aspects of marketing and public relations supporting MASS MoCA’s visual and performing arts programs. There is a strong emphasis on groundwork: street-level marketing throughout Western Massachusetts, Northwest Connecticut, Eastern-Central New York, and Southern Vermont. The marketing interns log lots of miles spreading news about MASS MoCA events across our beautiful region. Days in the office include written contributions to social media, eblasts, websites, press releases, and other promotional material. The interns are responsible for preparing press kits and for keeping MASS MoCA’s event listings current on regional event calendars. The interns help with bulk mailings, occasionally staff an off-site information booth interacting with tourists, and sometimes join a good-news team attending concerts, comedy shows, and music festivals around the northeast in support of our extensive program of live events. Interns are expected to attend internal and inter-departmental marketing meetings, give museum tours, and pick up a weekly shift at the museum’s busy Info Desk. If that sounds like a lot, it’s because it is — and we promise tons of fun along the way! A driver’s license and sense of humor are required.
Audience Services Intern

The Audience Services Intern reports to the Box Office Manager. This position incorporates interpersonal skills and organizational skills to operate and coordinate all aspects of ticket sales for both Performing Arts events and Gallery Admission. The Audience Services Intern will assist the Box Office Manager with data management, generating lists, analysing ticketing data, acting as a greeter and providing customer service (general information about MASS MoCA and North Adams), as well as maintaining the overall look of the lobby. The Audience Services Intern is responsible for providing phone and administrative support, processing ticket orders, maintaining the mailing list database and daily cash drawer. This Intern will be responsible for working the information desk, giving private and public tours of the MASS MoCA Galleries, attending a variety of events to promote MASS MoCA, such as The Green River Festival and at a variety of downtown / local happenings. This Intern will learn basic and complex functions of the Tessitura software. The capstone of the Internship is the FreshGrass Festival in September working all aspects of Front of House operations including supervision of volunteers, managing the guest list, sign list for Festival grounds and bag drop-off. Candidates must be friendly, patient, computer-savvy, a self-starter and confident to work independently during performing arts and outreach events. Knowledge of the North Adams area and experience with customer service are preferred. Experience with ticketing software (Tessitura) is desirable but not required. Customer service experience is a must. A driver’s license might be helpful, but is not required.
