Project Summary:

The Minnesota Historical Society is committed to program evaluation as a valuable tool for strengthening the quality of our programs and to measure and improve outcomes for those we serve. This Intern will support various projects to develop staff resources for program evaluation. Several visitor studies will be conducted throughout the year.  The major focus is to support the development of an institutional dashboard for reporting and sharing performance results. This includes data collection, data entry and cleaning, graph creation for internal and external dashboards, as well as written dashboard reports.

Intern Tasks May Include:

  • Collect dashboard data from multiple data “owners”
  • Verify and/or correct discrepancies in data
  • Enter data into online dashboard database
  • Create charts and graphs for visual display of data
  • Create written dashboard reports from templates
  • Conduct visitor intercept surveys
  • Conduct qualitative data analysis
  • Other evaluation projects as assigned

 

Knowledge and skills intern is expected to gain:

  • Knowledge of program evaluation in a museum environment
  • Experience working with museum professionals and program evaluators
  • Experience designing and implementing dashboards for reporting performance results
  • Experience with evaluation capacity building

 

Ideal Degrees:   Program evaluation, museum studies, history, education, or related field.

 

Student Qualifications:  Must be a junior or senior undergraduate or graduate level student, with a passion for history, informal learning and evaluation. Must possess the following:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Detail-oriented
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team setting
  • Experience planning, developing and implementing projects
  • Motivated, with strong work ethic
  • Comfort level with taking on multiple tasks and working with more than one supervisor.

Required Submissions

Writing sample that demonstrates writing ability. In addition, if available, samples of writing with graphs and charts are also welcome.

Fall 2016 Design Intern [Minnesota Historical Society, St. Paul, MN]

Project Summary: The MNHS Press Design Intern will assist the publishing staff in the areas of print production, design, marketing, and administration. We offer an exciting opportunity to work with veteran staff willing to share their knowledge of the book industry, and also provide unique and independent projects.  The intern will be working in an office environment with a mix of computer and non-computer related work.

Student Responsibilities:

Marketing

  • Meet with Marketing staff at the beginning of the internship to learn about department functions
  • Research markets, new books, and available print and online marketing tools for the industry
  • Brainstorm marketing ideas with the Marketing department
  • Design new book covers and academic print or electronic direct mailing pieces
  • Provide assistance in delivering image files for publicity and online use
  • Provide production and design assistance for press kits, etc.
  • Web site and blog design, including production of audio/video podcasts & book trailers

 

Editorial

  • Meet with the Editorial department to learn about department functions
  • Conduct library and Internet research for potential books/anthologies/reprints
  • Conduct photo and art research for covers and interiors, including permissions and ordering
  • Read trade journals and attend acquisitions meetings

 

Production

  • Meet with the Production Manager to learn about department functions and attend production meetings
  • Complete production and design work on print-on-demand titles and reprints, including reworking existing cover and text files
  • Provide production and design support for new titles, including cover and interior designs
  • Support E-book production management

 

Administrative

  • Attend staff meetings; meet with the Press Director and other divisional staff to learn the business
  • Production and design presentation assistance, including charts, graphs, and PowerPoint

 

Knowledge intern is expected to gain:

  • Knowledge of the MHS Press overall business, strategy, and function
  • Experience in all aspects of working with the MHS Press
  • Design samples for student portfolio
Ideal Degrees: Graphic design.  Marketing, business, English, art, history or communications majors will be considered. However, preference will be given to students with a design background.

Student Qualifications:  The ideal intern candidate should have a working knowledge of graphic design and that field’s associated computer software (Adobe Creative Suite) as well as general research & communication skills.  An interest in book design and production, top notch organizational skills, aptitude/interest in social media/marketing & the demonstrated ability to work independently are also highly sought after. Experience with Microsoft Office and the Google software suite are also preferred.
