DAR Museum Internship 2016 [National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Washington, DC]

Description:

The intern will assist with the planning and execution of education programs, including school programs, Girl Scouts, family programs, and tours. The intern will collect visitor data through attendance numbers and in-person surveys.

In addition, the intern will complete one major project from the following:

  • The intern will use the Common Core requirements to add fifth grade standards to the DAR Museum’s three Portable Education Programs (PEPs). The PEPs currently contain lessons with standards for fourth grade. The intern will work with the Curator of Education to add the appropriate standards and to redesign lessons when necessary
  • The intern will research and redesign the 30-45 minute outreach presentations given by Correspondent Docents throughout the country. Each presentation addresses a portion of the museum’s collection and consists of a slideshow and written script to be read aloud. The intern will work with the Assistant Curator of Education to update both the look and content of the programs.
Requirements:

  • Enrolled undergraduate or graduate student in a museum studies program or related field of study
  • Knowledge or interest in decorative arts, history, education, and/or museum studies in general
  • Comfortable interacting with the public
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Basic computer skills

Time Commitment:

Summer/Fall/Spring semester; Up to 20 hours/week or what is needed to meet academic requirements for credit.

Fall 2016 Oral History Department Intern [Minnesota Historical Society, St. Paul, MN]

Project Summary: The intern will work with the Oral History department’s collections. The primary responsibility of the intern will be to transcribe, review, and edit interviews and catalog Oral History Projects.

Student Responsibilities:

  • Transcribe audio interviews into written transcriptions
  • Prepare interviews for publication.
  • Catalog interviews, and get them ready for access online.
  • Attend staff meetings as needed.

Knowledge intern is expected to gain:

  • Training in Oral History standard practices.
  • Experience transcribing and editing.
  • Experience in the Collections department.
  • Experience in a professional museum environment.
  • Projects worked on will eventually be online and will make a great addition to the intern’s portfolio.
  • Can present work done at staff meetings.
Ideal degrees:   History, or other applicable liberal arts major. College Seniors, Juniors, or Sophomores.

Student Qualifications:  Desired qualifications: Interest in state and local history and/or interest in transcribing, editing experience, detail oriented with strong organizational skills. Cataloging experience is a plus.
