Education interns work with the Curator of Education and the Education Assistant on projects relating to the Historical Society’s education programming. This internship will be tailored to your particular interest, with a focus on public programming, school curriculum development, or both. During your internship, you will work towards a final project: for example, developing, researching, and implementing a program for children or adults, or creating a lesson plan or pre-and post-visit materials for school groups. Whatever the focus of the project, interns are expected to participate in all of the education activities of the institution.Additionally, interns in education have the option to give tours to groups, help at programs for children and adults, assist with publicity for events and programs, and gain hands-on experience with historical research while working with primary sources. The United First Parish Church, Quincy “Church of the Presidents” History and Visitor Program is seeking volunteer guides for the 2016 season beginning April 19. Volunteer guides provide half-hour tours of the Church Sanctuary and the crypt, containing the tombs of President John Adams and First Lady Abigail Adams, and President John Quincy Adams and First Lady Louisa Catherine Adams. This volunteering opportunity is perfect for individuals who enjoy working with the public and who have an interest and passion for history and architecture. Prior experience as a guide or interpreter at a historic site/museum is helpful but certainly not a requirement. A working knowledge of Massachusetts colonial history, the Adams Presidents and First Ladies or Quincy is also very helpful, but again not a requirement for the position. Applicants must be able to climb stairs and be on their feet for extended periods of time Length of Commitment Volunteers are the lifeblood of this historical program. We ask volunteers to commit for the length of our season, which runs from April 19 – Nov. 11 The program hrs. are M-F 11 am – 4 pm, Sat/Sun Noon-4 pm. The minimum commitment is working one full shift, one week or weekend day per week. Training, orientation, and historical resources will be provided. Upon learning the material, a trainee may shadow as many tours as they wish until they are comfortable conducting tours independently.
