Club 101

Joining Clubs

There are many clubs available to join as part of your Cummings experience! Clubs are a great way to explore different facets of veterinary medicine and meet classmates with similar interests.

Clubs host lunch talks, dinners, wet-labs, and other events like field trips, hands-on experiences, and opportunities across a variety of topics. Speakers at club events can include Tufts faculty members, residents from our Cummings community, local Massachusetts practitioners, and special guests from different parts of the world.

SAVMA hosts an event called Vet Fest every fall, usually at the end of the 1st week of classes, which is our version of a club fair. Most clubs ask that members pay a small fee (usually $3-5) which helps them fund and plan activities and events for their members.

Vet Fest is also a BBQ social that serves as a “welcome back” party for all students, so it’s also a great place to meet classmates in other years and even some faculty members!

A full list of our active clubs on campus along with a short description and their current contact information is available on our Student Organizations page. If you miss Vet Fest or decide you want to join a club later in the year, feel free to reach out directly to the club you’re interested in!

Club Funding

Funding Application

SAVMA provides funding to all of our clubs on campus. There are two funding application cycles: one in the fall and one in the spring. The club funding application will be sent out to all the club leaders well in advance of the deadline, and it is also available on our Canvas page.

To complete the application, you will need the following information:

  • Your club’s current account balance
  • The cost of your annual dues
  • A list of your planned events for the semester with the estimated cost associated with each

In the application, you may request a specific amount of money for the semester. Our executive board will evaluate all the applications and allocate funds based on need and planned expenses.

Please note: All club funding applications must be submitted by the deadline. Clubs who do not ask for funding using the application will not be given funds by SAVMA.

Eligibility

To be eligible for club funding from SAVMA, all clubs must have:

  • At least one executive board member in attendance at Club Leader Meetings with the SAVMA president. These meetings occur once a semester.
  • A list of club members sent to the SAVMA board by mid-October

Tips

  • If your club has a national chapter, we highly recommend reaching out to them for additional funding
  • Some clubs are able to get funding by reaching out to related companies and corporations!
