We’re delighted to welcome Chris Burke, a graduate student in the PhD program at Tufts, to the Soft Matter Theory group as of the summer of 2012. Chris completed his BS in Physics at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, graduating with High Honors in 2011. Originally from South Plainfield, NJ, he spends his time outside of grad school reading authors like Kurt Vonnegut and David Foster Wallace.

Chris says about his summer research project:

“I’m studying the problem of how to make molecules with high nonlinear response to electric fields—this is important as these materials are used in fast optical switches for communications. I’ve constructed a simple Quantum Mechanical model in Mathematica to identify what features of the electronic environment are really necessary to optimize the molecular design.”
