Swarthmore College invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of Sustainability. Reporting directly to the President of the College, the Director will lead the College’s sustainability efforts, developing and implementing policies and programs to mitigate the College’s environmental impact and to build awareness of the connection between issues of sustainability and social justice. This includes helping to establish Swarthmore as a recognized leader in integrating sustainability into all aspects of the educational mission, operations, and institutional and community life/culture. The Director of Sustainability provides leadership to the many distinct sustainability efforts on campus and fosters a culture of sustainability among students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members, and the Board of Managers.
The successful candidate will be innovative and collaborative with excellent strategic, leadership, and team-building skills and will have broad knowledge of sustainability principles, best practices, and their application in the higher education/institutional environment. The new Director will be able to engage effectively with the academic and scholarly research work of the faculty and with the policies, practices, and goals of campus operations and student sustainability activities. Candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to the values and goals of Swarthmore’s private, residential liberal arts education and a desire to be an active and engaged member of the community.
The Sustainability Communications Coordinator will serve in the leadership role for communications and associated outreach activities for Appalachian’s Office of Sustainability. Position promotes Sustainability on our campus through communication of and participation in various programs that connect to our Faculty, Staff, Students, Outside Partners and the Community. Duties include serving as communications lead, program/project manager, providing consultation, counseling, performing program/project administration, conducting information research and analysis, and marketing Sustainability programs; and supervising student workers as needed.
Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc. is seeking a Sustainability Planner to join their Watertown, MA office to support their Environmental Planning team and conduct sustainability and climate change adaptation planning. VHB assists public and private sector clients in identifying and meeting their sustainability and environmental goals. VHB’s environmental services team provides strategic support and environmental analysis, develops and evaluates sustainability initiatives, develops screening and reporting tools, engages stakeholders and prepares technical reports and documents.
Western’s Sustainability Action Plan (SAP) is intended to become the University’s guiding document for the incorporation of sustainable principles and practices into the broad areas of academics, operations, outreach, and administration. The SAP will consist of several chapters related to the different areas of sustainability activity on Western’s campus including Western curricula, student life, campus engagement, management of resources and operations, facilities planning and design, research activities, community relations, business and finance, the extra-curricular life of Western and others. Each chapter will contain content such as background information, long term goals, potential objectives and strategies, prioritized action steps relative to resource need, and key performance indicators.
With oversight from the Sustainability Manager, the SAP Coordinator will act as the primary organizing position and editor for the creation of Western’s Sustainability Action Plan. This will be achieved through several mechanisms including meeting facilitation, public input, research, writing, and presentation. This position will form a working relationship with Western’s Sustainability Advisory Committee (SAC), the body charged with completion of the SAP. The SAP Coordinator will usher the SAP through the necessary approvals, aligning the document to Western’s mission and strategic plan.
