3D In Vitro Blood-Brain Barrier Tissue Model

Project Summary:
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) regulates brain homeostasis and restricts entry of large molecules, pathogens, and immune cells. BBB breakdown and dysfunction from brain injuries and diseases can lead to neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. We aim to create an in vitro system that recapitulates many in vivo features, including the 3D cellular morphology, compartmentalization, and mechanical properties. This tissue model can help understand the critical role of the BBB in the inception and progression of various central nervous system diseases.
