National Coming Out Day

A Happy Recognition of ‘National Coming Out Day’! To everyone out there who is out or who are still discovering their identity as it might relate to the LGBTQ+ community, you are supported! Be brave, be true, be proud!

National Coming Out Day marks the anniversary of the second major March on Washington on October 11, 1987. On this day, 500,000 people marched on Washington. The idea behind the day was to support LGBTQ+ people “coming out” (a term that stems from the phrase “come out of the closet”) to friends or family about their sexuality and to counteract homophobia because “homophobia thrives in an atmosphere of silence and ignorance and that once people know that they have loved ones who are lesbian or gay, they are far less likely to maintain homophobic or oppressive views especially if they live in developed countries.” (Wikipedia entry).
