DRA’s FAQ of the Week: If I am conducting validity testing for a potential survey study, do I need IRB approval first?
Yes! Because you are interacting with humans to receive feedback on a tool to be utilized in research, those humans are considered research subjects. That means we need IRB approval before you can interact with these subjects. That is because we need the IRB to ensure the recruitment language you want to use for validity testing is at an 8th grade reading level, we need the IRB’s approval for however you plan to collect permission from these humans to have them be research subjects, and we need the IRB to approve that the risks in this study do not outweigh any benefits (aka is the study “safe”?). Essentially, anytime you are interacting with humans or their data for research purposes (so not interacting with them strictly for a course or program), we need prior approval from the IRB first.
NIH All About Grants Podcast: What Early Career Researchers Should Know

Prior Approval Requests for Revisions to an Approved Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plan Must be Submitted Using the Prior Approval Module (NOT-OD-23-185)
Reminder: Any changes to an approved Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMS Plan) (for funded awards subject to the Final NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy) requires the recipient to submit a timely formal prior approval request to the funding NIH Institute, Center, or Office (ICO). Recipients must submit these requests through the Prior Approval Module in eRA Commons. This functionality will be available for NIH grants effective October 12, 2023, and will be used exclusively for submitting requests for updating the DMS Plan.
