HSDA: Mexican Consulate OHI Tabeling

The Tufts Chapter of the Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) continued its partnership with El Consulado General de Mexico (Mexican Consulate) in downtown Boston by leading an OHI presentation and visit on May 23rd, 2024. The partnership aims to enhance the oral health of the Hispanic community here in Boston – addressing critical aspects of oral health education that are often overlooked.

The event was spearheaded by the HSDA Community Engagement Co-Chair, Erika Magaña (D25) and other involvement included Adriana Iturbide (D25). Event volunteers were Edgar Aragon (D25), Manuela Cardenas (D25), and Sebastian Pinto (D25) – whose dedication to their communities were instrumental in the success of the day.

The event featured a comprehensive OHI presentation designed to educate attendees on various crucial topics related to oral health. Covering the fundamentals of routine dental care and emphasizing the importance of regular dental check-ups and cleanings was also emphasized.

The importance of dietary choices and their impact on oral health were also a significant focus of the presentation. By educating families on the correlation between diet and oral health, HSDA aimed to encourage healthier lifestyle choices that contribute to better overall health outcomes.

Moreover, the event wasn’t just limited to the dissemination of information. To ensure practical application of the knowledge shared, the HSDA team distributed oral hygiene kits to all attendees. These kits contained essential dental care items such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, with special note of gratitude to TUSDM Community Service Coordinator, Nancy Marks and her team.

Tufts HSDA is committed to empowering Boston’s Hispanic/Latinx community by equipping them with the knowledge and resources needed to improve and maintain great oral health. With the hope of making a mark on the improved oral and overall health of greater Boston communities, this event shows the positive impact of individual-focused healthcare initiatives and the role of dedicated students in fostering healthier communities.
