Dental Students Promote Oral Health at UMass Boston’s “Black Health and Early Detection Expo”
On April 18th, 2025, Tufts dental students Debra Baskerville (D26) and Kennedey (D28) proudly delivered an impactful oral health presentation at the University of Massachusetts Boston. The event, titled the Black Health and Early Detection Expo, was open to the public and featured a wide range of micro-sessions designed to promote health education across multiple disciplines. Debra and Kennedey led a session titled “From Gums to Heart,” which focused on the crucial link between oral health and systemic health.
The expo was organized by the Physical and Mental Health Committee of the Boston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, where Debra Baskerville serves as a committee member. The event also featured sessions on topics such as navigating stress, maternal and paternal health, and the concept of food as medicine. It was a collaborative and interdisciplinary effort to promote preventive health measures and early detection across various
aspects of well-being.
The “From Gums to Heart” micro-session highlighted the importance of proper oral hygiene, the identification and prevention of common oral diseases, and the impact oral health has on cardiovascular and systemic conditions. Attendees received practical tips for maintaining oral health and learned about the barriers that underserved communities often face in accessing routine dental care.
The presentation was well-received by both UMass Boston students and members of the greater Boston community. Attendees left with a stronger understanding of how oral health is a key component of overall wellness. As future dental professionals and committed members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Debra and Kennedey are proud to support public health initiatives that align with the values of service, scholarship, and community
empowerment.
