Annual Juneteenth Picnic

At the annual Juneteenth picnic held at Franklin Park in Roxbury, MA, SNDA had the privilege of participating in a meaningful community service event. We set up an educational booth where we provided valuable information about oral health to members of the Boston community. Throughout the day, we engaged with individuals of all ages, from young children to elderly adults answering questions, demonstrating proper brushing and flossing techniques, and emphasizing the importance of regular dental visits. We also handed out oral hygiene kits containing toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss to help participants begin or improve their daily routines.
The picnic itself was vibrant and full of energy, with music, food, and cultural celebration creating a welcoming atmosphere. What stood out as most beneficial was the opportunity to help people establish a consistent morning oral hygiene routine. Many attendees shared that they lacked dental education or resources, and it was incredibly fulfilling to empower them with practical knowledge they could take home. For us as dental students, the experience reinforced the importance of community outreach and culturally competent care. We learned how powerful face-to-face education can be in breaking down barriers to oral health and fostering trust within underserved populations. This event reminded us that small efforts can make a lasting impact when rooted in compassion and shared celebration.
