Humans of TUSDM: Samantha Rivera (D24)

In the blur of what dental school can feel like, “Humanizing TUSDM" is a project created by Yenna Chu (D27) to remind us of our shared humanity and the special stories that make us who we are. The project hopes for members of the Tufts Dental community to find comfort in knowing they are not alone on this journey and to help build new connections through storytelling.
Samantha Rivera (D24)

“Since my early childhood, I’ve carried a deep ambition that continues to shape my journey. Becoming the first dentist in my family fills me with immense pride. In just a few days, I’ll be starting as an associate dentist in Orlando, near my hometown of Clearwater, after graduating from Tufts. This opportunity feels like a culmination of all the hard work and dreams I’ve nurtured.

I chose general dentistry for its diverse skill set – encompassing implants, endodontics, pediatrics, prosthetics, and more – which captivates me. My ultimate goal is to establish my own practice, but I understand the importance of patience and continuous learning. Beyond my career aspirations, maintaining connections with my closest friends from dental school is a priority.

A recent trip back to the Philippines was a profound homage to my roots, shared with my significant other. It reminded me of the journey from humble beginnings, where access to dental care was a luxury. This disparity fueled my desire to make a difference, whether through my future clinic or volunteer work.

Reflecting on my time at Tufts, I’ve learned that success in dental school demands resilience and time management—lessons I’ve embraced wholeheartedly. My mantra, “Show up and the magic happens,” (Dr. Trombly) has carried me through long clinic hours and exams.

My path to Tufts was guided by a mentor who saw potential in me during my days as a dental assistant. Their encouragement led me to Boston, a place unfamiliar yet welcoming. Tufts’ supportive community and robust resources, like mentorship programs and the American Student Dental Association (ASDA), enriched my experience profoundly.

If I could offer advice to underclassmen, it would be to embrace challenges without losing sight of self-care. Stress is inevitable, but finding support among peers is invaluable. As a clinician, I’ve discovered the joy of treating patients not just as cases, but as cherished individuals.

Each step of this journey reaffirms my commitment to dentistry and the communities I serve. I’m eager to continue learning, growing, and eventually making my mark in the field soon.”
