Mashpee Wampanoag Powwow Oral Health Outreach

SAIDS and AAPHD joined forces to attend the Mashpee Wampanoag Annual Powwow, to give out dental hygiene products and educate on the importance of oral health. We handed out over 250 toothbrushes and toothpaste to every age group. It was a great experience to immerse ourselves into and learn about the Mashpee Wampanoag culture.

American Indians face the highest rate of oral health disparities of any other minority group. It was a great opportunity to gain cultural competence on an indigenous community nearby and to help combat these oral health disparities through oral health education. This would not have been a success without the efforts of Dr. Yered, Dr. Shanmugham, Natalie Ingram, Aleksja Hoxha, Joseph Korin, and Colby Dean. Thank you to the public health office, Colgate, and Haleon for their donations of products.
