Tufts University Hosts Chinatown Ice Cream Social

Boston, MA – On Wednesday, August 7, Tufts University hosted its 3rd annual Chinatown Ice Cream Social, inviting neighborhood community partners to take a break from the summer heat with a cold treat on its Health Sciences Campus in Chinatown.

Over 100 Chinatown community partners and neighbors gathered at Tufts Community Common where they enjoyed ice creams from the local ice cream shop, Frozen Hoagies.  At the social, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine Dean Nadeem Karimbux was in attendance to greet neighbors.  Chinatown’s Wang YMCA hosted a resource table and activity to share upcoming programming.

During the event, guests had the opportunity to learn more about abundance among us, a new public art exhibit at the Tufts Community Common, created by Sheila Novak, Community Collaborator Cass Li with project support from Wen-hao Tien and Maria Fong. The project is a part of the Un-monument | Re-monument| De-monument: Transforming Boston Project presented by Pao Arts Center, curated by Lani Asunción, and funded by the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture, and the City of Boston with support from the Mellon Foundation.

Liza Perry, deputy director of Tufts University’s office of Government and Community Relations said: “Bringing our Chinatown neighbors together over an ice cream during the summer season is the perfect way to celebrate our strong partnership with the community. We are so fortunate to be a part of the Chinatown neighborhood, a vibrant and diverse place to work, live, and enjoy public art like abundance among us. We look forward to the community enjoying the exhibit at Tufts over the coming months.”
