Queer Dental Collective Hosts Discussion on Trans Patients at TUSDM

On March 10th, the Queer Dental Collective (QDC) at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM) hosted a powerful and insightful discussion focused on improving the healthcare experiences of trans patients. The event was led by Helen Edgar (she/her), a familiar face at TUSDM as an Administrative Coordinator, and Candace Nguyen (she/her), a Boston-based trans activist, community leader, and Executive Assistant to the Environment Cabinet at Boston City Hall.

With a room full of engaged students, faculty, and staff, the discussion explored personal experiences—both positive and negative—that trans individuals have had with healthcare providers. Helen and Candace shared their own perspectives, helping attendees reflect on the impact of provider interactions and the importance of fostering a safe, inclusive clinical environment.

Key topics of the conversation included common misconceptions about the trans community, the importance of using correct names and pronouns, and strategies for building trust with trans patients. Attendees were encouraged to think critically about biases in healthcare and identify concrete steps they could take to ensure their future patients feel seen, respected, and valued.

Practical takeaways included small but meaningful changes, such as normalizing the use of pronouns in clinical settings and addressing structural barriers that trans patients often face in accessing care.

The conversation emphasized that while healthcare providers may not always have all the answers, a commitment to listening, learning, and making intentional efforts toward inclusivity can significantly improve patient experiences.

QDC is proud to continue fostering these important conversations and remains dedicated to promoting safe and affirming spaces for LGBTQIA2S+ students, patients, and providers. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to this vital discussion! Stay tuned for future events focused on equity, inclusion, and culturally competent care in dentistry.
