Omegas Pathways Volunteering
On June 26th, Debra Baskerville, D26 and Shirley Jean-Pierre, D26 volunteered on the behalf of Dental Fraternity Delta Sigma Delta Dental at the “Omegas Pathways: STEAM Careers & Insights” an event held at Harvard University’s Barker Center. This event was tailored for high school and college students exploring different career options and was organized in partnership with the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, a community service-based organization.
The event itself went amazingly well! It was so encouraging to see students and their families come through with such open minds and genuine curiosity about different professional paths. At the TUSDM table, the students answered questions students had about oral health and dental careers. They also set up a fun dental trivia game where students and their family members could test their knowledge and win a goodie bag with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Many people were so intrigued by the explanations shared after each answer that they came back to play again!
What the students learned from this experience is the importance of meeting people where they are, especially younger students who may not have considered dentistry as a career. Creating a welcoming, interactive space sparked interest and helped break down some of the mystery around oral health. It was deeply rewarding to see how even a short conversation could plant a seed that might grow into a future interest in dentistry or simply greater awareness about oral health.
