LGBTQIA+ Oral Health Week

We hope you’ll join us this year for our annual “LGBTQIA+ Oral Health Week” from October 20 to 24, 2025. Our theme for the week’s activities builds on our 2025 Colloquium theme, “Dental Care is a Human Right: Empowering the Oral Health Community to Engage in Advocacy and Action for the Well-being of the LGBTQIA+ Community.”

Grounded in the principle that health is a fundamental human right, this week-long awareness campaign highlights the barriers to care faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. Historically, LGBTQIA+ people have experienced stigma and discrimination when accessing health care services, creating significant disparities such as feeling self-conscious or embarrassed about their dental status, anticipating difficulty finding dental care if needed, and being more likely to visit an emergency department for dental care.

AIDPH supports oral health professionals prioritizing nuanced approaches and practices that center on inclusive and culturally responsive care. Improving oral health professionals’ knowledge, attitudes, and comfort in providing clinical care for LGBTQIA+ individuals remains a critical aspect of advancing oral health equity for this community.

Equitable access to affordable, high-quality dental care — rooted in empathy and lived experience — is not a privilege; it is a moral imperative. Without good oral health, good overall health is impossible.
