AAWD Lecture: The Impact of Hormonal Changes on Women’s Periodontal Disease
On December 19th 2025, Dr. Aidee Herman gave an insightful lecture on periodontal disease in women and the impact of stress throughout their hormonal changes. Periodontal disease disproportionately affects women due to the complex interplay between hormonal fluctuations and psychosocial stressors across the life course. Hormonal changes associated with puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause can increase susceptibility to periodontal inflammation and disease progression.
Recognizing the importance and contribution of addressing women’s oral health through a biopsychosocial lens, Dr. Herman was appointed to the Executive Board of the American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD) as Assistant Director of Membership and serve as the faculty advisor for the Tufts student AAWD chapter.
