Military Fellows

The Military Fellows program provides Fletcher students with essential practical insights into the U.S. Armed Services.

Annually, ISSP hosts National Guard Senior Service College Fellows, Army Reserve Senior Service College Research Fellows, Air Force National Defense Fellows, VA Senior Service Fellows and Army Senior Service College Research Fellows.

The U.S. Armed Services send distinguished field grade officers who attend Fletcher in lieu of a war college or other senior-level educational institution. These officers attend Fletcher seminars and lectures, as well as participate actively in ISSP educational activities, including serving as guest lecturers. During the course of their fellowship, they are also required to complete a research paper on contemporary defense issues.

These Fellows are separate from the several military and U.S. Coast Guard students who come to Fletcher as degree candidates for the MA, MALD, and Ph.D. Of all the various groups that make up the Fletcher student enrollment, the military students are the single largest element.

Despite the reduction in the size of the U.S. military in the decade after the Cold War, the U.S. Armed Services continue to send at least as many officers to Fletcher as they had in the previous decade. This sustained participation reflects the important contribution that ISSP continues to make to the education of our future military leaders, as well as our high visibility and prestige within the Armed Services.
