2019 Conference on New Media and Democracy: Panel 3

Can the Platforms Save Us?
The Strengths and Limits of the Private Sector

3:00-4:15pm

While an open and deregulated internet has allowed entrepreneurs to create new and exciting products and services, such an opportunity has come at the cost of privacy, civil decency, and an undermining of democratic processes. In such a scenario, what is the role of the private sector in tackling disinformation and similar threats? Can private sector solutions address these issues alone? How can the new media technology inform effective public policy?
