Book Talk with Thom Shanker
On March 26, 2024, Fletcher welcomed alumnus Thom Shanker back to campus. Shanker and Andrew Hoehn are co-authors of Age of Danger: Keeping American Safe in an Era of New Superpowers, New Weapons, and New Threats. Published by Hachette, the book looks at major contemporary challenges facing the United States, including superpower rivalry, climate change, food insecurity, forced migration, pandemics, cybersecurity, and drones.
At the event, Shanker argued for expanding the definition of national security to encompass this broad array of 21st century threats. Faculty including Don Heflin, Karen Jacobsen, David Logan, Monica Duffy Toft, and Dean ad interim Kelly Sims Gallagher met with Shanker to discuss these challenges and his work to address them.
