SUMMARY STATEMENT:

The Museum of Science is actively interviewing for enthusiastic, upbeat front-line Visitor Services Representatives who thrive in a highly trafficked public environment. Cash handling skills required. Professional maturity, excellent customer service and communication skills a must! This is a uniformed position that requires working during scheduled holiday periods and school vacation weeks due to increased attendance.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Courteously and efficiently sell tickets and memberships to Museum visitors, giving accurate and helpful information to help them make their choices. Upgrade the sale whenever possible and ask point-of-sale survey questions as required. Handle large amounts of cash and credit card transactions honestly and accurately to protect Museum revenues.
  • Carefully check tickets/memberships at the entrance to venues to prevent unauthorized entrance and keep accurate manual counts as required.
  • Provide accurate information and helpful assistance in a courteous manner while on duty in any location.
  • Assist in evacuating visitors from the building during emergency situations in a calm and helpful manner.

AVAILABLE SHIFT:

Regular Part Time (13.50 hours/week):

  • Friday, 4:00pm – 10:00pm
  • Saturday, 8:45am – 5:15pm

Additional Scheduling during Summer and Vacation weeks

  • Saturday, 5:15pm – 7:15pm

POSITION SUMMARY

The Master Carpenter/Thatcher is responsible for the maintenance and construction of the reproduction structures and landscape in Plimoth Plantation’s 17th-Century English Village and Wampanoag Homesite. The individual uses historically appropriate techniques while interpreting to our guests as a first person role-player, or may work in modern clothing with modern tools, depending on the assignment. Acts as project foreman onsite. Effectively mentors Level 1 and 2 Museum Programs staff as they develop their skills as interpreters and tradesmen. Assist the Historical Built Landscapes Manager with routine building inspections, maintaining a prioritized workplan, project development, performance evaluations, and hiring.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the maintainance and construction of the houses, outbuildings, fences, and other structures in Plimoth Plantation’s 17th-Century English Village. Work is performed using period-appropriate tools and techniques, both in costume and in modern attire, depending on the assignment.
  • Assist in the maintenance and construction of structures on the Wampanoag Homesite, working closely with our Native staff, in modern clothing.
  • Assist contracted professionals in the construction and/or repair of large reproduction structures, including houses, the palisade, and the fort, as needed. Act as foreman/project manager and liaison to contracted professionals onsite.
  • Interpret to museum guests using historically appropriate work methods and first-person role-playing and/or as a modern expert, depending on the assignment.
  • Research various crafts, trades, and architecture to support and refine the historic context and interpretation of the 17th-Century English Village and Wampanoag Homesite, as assigned.
  • Structural maintenance. Work includes assessing condition of various structures in the Village and Homesite, reporting required repairs to the Resource Coordinator, Historical Built Landscapes Manager and/or Guest Experience Managers, and making repairs as necessary.
  • Assist the Manager in moving the organization forward both programmatically and as a healthy, productive workplace and prominent cultural institution with a national and international reputation for excellence. Collaborate with other departments on special projects, exhibits, grant proposals, public relations, and special events.
  • Research, produce, and maintain reproduction objects in both period and modern settings.
  • Assist and mentor Museum Programs staff in developing specialized skills and competencies, in maintaining the highest standards for museum programs and exhibits, and in developing new programs and exhibits for the benefit of our many museum audiences.
  • Pursue professional and program development by conducting appropriate research, consulting with experts and peers, and preparing documentation for internal or external publications.
  • Provide effective leadership and professional expertise in maintaining the high standard of staff training and productivity required to support the exhibition and interpretation of successful programs, techniques, tools, artifacts, materials, and equipment in accordance with Departmental and Institutional Mission. Continue to create, model and sustain a culture of philanthropy, and an exemplary level of Plimoth-style customer service and personal accountability. Provide a friendly and welcoming presence for all guests and coworkers throughout the Museum.
  • Off-site duties include seasonal harvesting of thatch and timber, and the processing of same. Additional off-site work includes gathering and processing firewood.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree or comparable trade experience.
  • At least five years’ experience in the restoration of historic or historical buildings.
  • Prior experience in the construction industry and/or working with contractors.
  • Strong interest in 17th-century European trades.
  • Interest in and appreciation for 17th-century English, Native American, and European history.

SUMMARY STATEMENT:

Assist in a variety of operational and administrative tasks to run an efficient summer program. May include: managing all student information, creating weekly class lists, providing face to face customer service to parents before and during program weeks, working with team of 16-18 high school interns as they facilitate out of classroom time for youth participants, ensuring proper supervision during transition times, assisting in supervision of field trips off site as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operational support for six weeks of summer programming for 500 students entering grades 1-8.

WORK SCHEDULE:

This position is temporary, full-time, 40 hours a week, from June 27th, 2016 to August 26th, 2016 with the following schedules available:

  • Monday – Friday, 10:00am – 6:00pm
  • Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm

HRIS Administrator

Under the direction of the Manager of Benefits and HRIS, the HRIS Administrator will participate in the implementation and ongoing maintenance of the Payroll and HRIS systems (ADP Workforce Now and Oracle), providing functional and technical support; and ensuring data and system integrity. This is a one year term position.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Take a lead role in the payroll and HR system upgrade to Workforce Now working closely with the Benefits Manager, Payroll Manager and ADP to design procedures that will streamline and automate the overall payroll process
  • Work to audit, organize and import existing HR data into Workforce Now
  • Assist in the review, testing, validation and implementation of new modules and functionality including employee self service, manager self service, time off and scheduling, and benefit carrier feeds
  • Troubleshoot configuration and reporting issues to identify and fix root causes
  • Responsible for day-to-day database operations, including data entry, administration and troubleshooting
  • Provide system training and support to end users
  • Develop procedural guides and end user documentation
  • Ensure delivery of high-quality service to end users
  • Develop Ad-hoc reports in support of HR and MFA leadership
  • Work on special projects as requested

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of experience in various Human Resource disciplines
  • 3+ years previous experience with Oracle, Workforce Now or another HRIS system
  • Knowledge of HRIS design, structure, functions and processes
  • Outstanding analytical and report writing skills; experience with Oracle Discoverer preferred
  • Must be organized, detail-oriented, and have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work with, and protect confidential information at the highest levels

About Appleton Farms and the Position:

Appleton Farms, a 1,000 acre farm located in Ipswich, MA, is the oldest continuously operating farm in the country. The working dairy, cheese making facility, barnyard animals, beautiful trails, engaging education programs, and deep history make this a special place to visit and work. The Education Assistant helps execute our suite of farm-based education programs and events in spring, summer, and fall. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands on experience in farm-based education, including curriculum development and independent program implementation. Beginning immediately and ending in late October, this position will work alongside our Farm Educator, Events Coordinator, and farm staff to engage hundreds of visitors in our mission and working farm. The position is 20 hours a week, and Sundays are required.

The Education Assistant will play a lead role in developing and delivering educational programming for schools, public tours, and weekend family programs. The Education Assistant will also support the planning and delivery of our larger summer farm to table dinners and our annual Family Farm Day in September. Additional duties will include orienting visitors at our Welcome Center, training volunteers, and selling memberships. This position requires someone who is outgoing, loves the outdoors and enjoys working with children.

Essential Functions:

  • Deliver exceptional farm-based educational programs that highlight the work of Appleton Farms and The Trustees.
  • Work with the Farm Educator to plan activities, program components, and logistics to ensure a high level of program satisfaction.
  • Execute programs both independently and alongside the Farm Educator.
  • Welcome and orient visitors, sell memberships, and work towards a positive experience for everyone vising the farm.
  • Answer phone and email inquiries for programs and send surveys as program follow-up.
  • Manage parking, signage, and other program logistics.
  • Ensure safety and policy compliance at all programs and events.
  • Assist with other Appleton stewardship, farm, and retail operations on an as needed basis including set up and break down at events.
  • Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation

Qualifications:
The ability to translate the importance of local farms, sustainable agriculture, and the agrarian history of Appleton Farms to multiple audiences in an inspiring and age-appropriate manner. A willingness to learn and work with the dairy, cheese making, CSA, and stewardship programs is required. Other qualifications include:

  • Obtained or working towards Bachelor’s Degree within a focus area of Environmental Science, Early Childhood Education, Sustainable Agriculture, or similar
  • Experience working with children in an educational or outdoor setting required
  • Excellent organization and communication skills with the creativity and experience to execute programs at Appleton Farms
  • Knowledge of sustainable agriculture, natural history, or food systems
  • Ability to manage large groups in a positive and efficient manner.

Other Requirements:

  • Weekday, weekend, holiday and evening work required.Sundays are required.
  • Valid driver’s license, as well as a satisfactory driving record as defined in The Trustees driving policy is required.
  • Satisfactory criminal background check (CORI).
  • Must be able to handle the pressure of large events; ability to lift 40lbs, stand for long periods of time, and set up and break down events, is required.
