When I first came to the US, I was shocked to be the only girl in the class. And, for a long time, I thought the problem was “the pipeline”. I was told repeatedly by well-meaning school officials, peers, and other girls in different departments that “not enough girls choose to pursue STEM”. I never liked the implications that came with it, but nevertheless, I tried to pursue other girls and non-binary students to join STEM fields. However, I am a strong believer now, that the pipeline is broken for a reason! Minorities cannot thrive in #STEM fields. Despite the best efforts of some schools the disparity still persists.
I think the first step is to start communicating at the students’ level and clarify some misconceptions and even explain some of the problems.
