iMiD 2012 in Daegu, Republic of Korea
Daegu, Korea—I just gave today an invited presentation, “Multistable Alignment of Nematic Liquid Crystals on Patterned Surfaces” as part of a session on liquid crystal alignment at the International Meeting on Information Display, held annually in South Korea.
The meeting was a tremendous success, attracting over 1500 scientists to the city of Daegu to discuss new research on display technology. It was also a great opportunity to catch up with some friends who are also alumni of the Rosenblatt lab. Below, from left to right, are Yoonseuk Choi of Hanbat National University, Daesung Kang, Tim Atherton of Tufts and Ji-Hoon Lee of Pusan National University.
Korea is a very beautiful country with a rich cultural heritage. Yoonseuk was kind enough to take me to see some of the ancient treasures of Gyeongju, the capital of the Silla kingdom which existed from 56BC to 935AD. Here I am in front of the Cheongungyo (Blue Cloud Bridge, 청운교,靑雲橋) and Baegungyo (White Cloud Bridge, 백운교,百雲橋) Bridges at the Bulguksa temple. Each step on these bridges corresponds to one of the 33 heavens of Buddhism. Thanks to Yooseuk for being such a kind host.
