Enjoying a Sustainable President’s Year-end Celebration

On Wednesday May 25, 2016, President Anthony Monaco hosted the first picnic in a three part, year end, celebration on the president’s lawn. This first picnic was an open invitation to all on the Medford/Somerville campus to enjoy good food and beautiful weather. Following picnics will be held on the Boston campus, Monday, June 13, and the Grafton campus, Wenesday, June 15.

As part of Tufts’ university-wide commitment to sustainability, the first event was and the remaining two will be zero waste.

Tufts Catering did away with individually packaged  condiments and drinks instead serving in bulk to cut down on the amount of waste it would create.

A big shout out to the staff at Tufts Catering who made much of the picnic possible.

We made sure all food waste was composted with some great help from our Recycling Interns .

We encouraged the Medford/Somerville invites to BYOP (bring your own reusable place setting) to help Tufts reduce as much waste as possible – and they did it with 145 people helping to make the event sustainable!!

Call for Papers: Oxford Round Table

The Round Table will hold our 12th Annual International Conference on Environment, Global Warming and Climate Change during the dates of July 20 – July 23, 2016 at Harris Manchester College in the University of Oxford, Oxford, England. Harris Manchester College is one of the thirty-eight colleges that form the University of Oxford and was founded in 1786.

You are invited and encouraged to make a presentation and to provide a paper on a relevant aspect of the topic, however, your participation as a member of the Round Table is not contingent thereon. Those not presenting papers will be placed on a discussion panel. Papers presented at the Round Table may be subsequently submitted for publication in the Forum, a journal of the Round Table. Papers considered for publication in the Forum are evaluated by peer reviewers as to technical and substantive quality and for potential to make a significant contribution to new knowledge in the field.

Call for Papers: Reducing Urban Poverty (Graduate Students)

To encourage a new generation of urban policy makers and promote early career research, Cities Alliance, IHC – Global Coalition for Inclusive Housing and Sustainable Cities, USAID, the Wilson Center, and the World Bank are co-sponsoring the 7th annual paper competition for graduate students, seeking abstracts on urban poverty in the developing world.

The grand prize winner will receive a travel stipend to attend the United Nations Habitat III Conference in Quito, Ecuador, in October 2016. Winning papers will be published and selected authors will be invited to present their work in a policy workshop at the Wilson Center in Washington, D.C.

Just in time for MCBC, we’ve partnered with our friends at MassBike to host a free webinar on Thursday, May 12th from 12:00-1:00 to explore the nuts & bolts of bike commuting. If you, or someone you know is part of the 60% of Americans who are interested in bike commuting but feel too concerned to start, this is the event for you.
Learn from the experts and ask questions about how you can make biking a part of your daily commute, during Bike Week and all year round!

Nominate Someone (or yourself!) for a Wheelie Award!

The Wheelie Awards are a special way to recognize and honor cyclists who ride with a unique level of dedication and excitement. For example, do you know someone who rides their bike like a minivan? Nominate them for the Pack Mule Award! Know someone who fell in love while cycling? Nominate them for the Bicycle Love Story Award! You get the idea.

One winner will be selected in each of the following categories to win a special prize provided by the sponsor of that award ($200+ value!).  Award decisions are based on online written submissions, as well as accompanying photos and videos sent via email.

Join the 2016 Tufts Century Ride!

The Office of the Provost is pleased to announce that this year’s Tufts Century Ride will take place on Saturday, September 17, 2016! Registration is now open through September 2nd.

The Tufts Century Ride is approximately a 100 mile bike ride open to the entire university community with stops on the Medford/Somerville, Grafton, and Boston campuses (i.e., Tufts Century). For those who prefer a shorter ride, there will also be route options available beginning at approximately 20 miles. In collaboration with the Tufts Cycling Team, the Tufts Century Ride is meant to provide a fun way for community members to connect, and a unique way to see our three campuses.
