Just in time for MCBC, we’ve partnered with our friends at MassBike to host a free webinar on Thursday, May 12th from 12:00-1:00 to explore the nuts & bolts of bike commuting. If you, or someone you know is part of the 60% of Americans who are interested in bike commuting but feel too concerned to start, this is the event for you.
Learn from the experts and ask questions about how you can make biking a part of your daily commute, during Bike Week and all year round!

The Wheelie Awards are a special way to recognize and honor cyclists who ride with a unique level of dedication and excitement. For example, do you know someone who rides their bike like a minivan? Nominate them for the Pack Mule Award! Know someone who fell in love while cycling? Nominate them for the Bicycle Love Story Award! You get the idea.

One winner will be selected in each of the following categories to win a special prize provided by the sponsor of that award ($200+ value!).  Award decisions are based on online written submissions, as well as accompanying photos and videos sent via email.

Bay State Bike Week

Every May Massachusetts residents come together to celebrate human-powered, two-wheeled transportation. From Cape Cod to the Berkshires participants organize events like film screenings, bike breakfasts, festivals and more to encourage new riders and raise awareness about bicycle transportation.

It is fitting that Massachusetts is the only state in the nation with a truly statewide bike week, given our long history of biking. From Worcester’s bike racing champion Major Taylor to the world-famous Springfield Bicycle Club Tournament, the love of biking has deep roots.

What’s New for 2015?

Win Raffle Prizes! – This year, we’re adding some exciting options for our event participants and event organizers. Every day, Bay State Bike Week participants will have the option to log their bicycling trip in NuRide – the nation’s largest ridematching and incentive program for individuals who take green trips- and be entered to win a daily raffle prize. Whether you’re starting your own event or joining an existing one, let’s PUMP up those events, log your bike trips in NuRide, and make this the biggest Bay State Bike week ever!

MassCommute Bicycle Challenge

The MassCommute Bicycle Challenge (MCBC) is a week-long, FREE and friendly competition amongst Massachusetts businesses, educational institutions, and municipalities. The 2015 MCBC will take place during Bay State Bike Week (May 9th – 17th).

This exciting corporate challenge has been hosted by MassCommute for Bay State bicyclists for over 20 years! Please join us this year for prizes, raffles, and our legendary “Bike Bash” celebration!

Register for the MCBC here

When you register, make sure that your team receives proper credit on the Leader Board by entering your business/institution name AND the municipal location in which you work. E.g., if you work at Putnam Investments in Andover, register your company as Putnam Investments-Andover; if you work at Putnam Investments in Boston, register your company as Putnam Investments-Boston.

RIDE & LOG TRIPS

Ride as many times as you can and log your trips/total miles for all trips by bike during May 9-17. We especially encourage you to use your bicycle for transportation such as commuting, dining, going to a movie or soccer game, running errands, etc. Biking is a great way to get where you need to go!

WIN PRIZES & AWARDS

Win great prizes and awards by participating in the MCBC during Bay State Bike Week. We will be distributing daily raffle prizes throughout the week of May 9-17th, and we will also host our legendary raffle during the Bike Bash with prizes donated by some of our favorite bike-friendly businesses!

Internship, Medford Energy & Environment Office (Medford, MA)

The Office of Energy and Environment in Medford has an opening for a summer intern position to assist the Medford Bicycle Advisory Commission develop a Bicycle Infrastructure Master Plan.  The Commission has been in existence for two years, and recently held a public workshop to provide direction for the Master Plan.  The intern would be expected to take the lead in converting the raw material from the workshop into a draft master plan, including:

  1. Review prior work done in the City related to bicycle infrastructure, including the raw material from the workshop
  2. Develop an outline of a master plan document, working with Commission members
  3. Perform field work to verify existing conditions, including photographs and measurements
  4. Develop draft recommendations based on meetings with Commission members, supplemented by independent research with respect to standards and common practices elsewhere.
  5. Prepare a draft master plan document, including  text and graphics, and respond to comments by the Commissioners.

Other potential tasks, if time allowed, would include developing a marketing and communications plan to bring about behavior change in regard to: cyclist behavior and compliance with rules of the road, pedestrian safety, and driver awareness of cyclists and pedestrians.

Responsibilities also include administrative office tasks in the City of Medford Office of Energy & Environment.  Summer interns expected to work a minimum of 20 hours a week, during City Hall’s open business hours (Mon, Tues, Thurs 8:30-4:30, Wed 8:30-7:30, Fri 8:30-12:30).

Possibility to continue on other projects in the Fall semester and could start part-time immediately. Position is unpaid during the summer with the potential to stay on as work-study during the school year. A good candidate is a self-starter who can work independently, use common sense and take initiative, and who has good writing skills.
