New Solar Carport Installation at the Medford Campus

Tufts University’s Auxiliary and Transportation Services department has announced the construction of a new solar carport for charging electric vehicles. The carport will be located in the Cohen Parking Lot on Lower Campus Road in Medford. It will provide charging for up to six electric vehicles. Construction of the carport will begin April 15, 2021 and is expected to be completed on April 30, 2021.

In the near term, parking spots in the carport will be on a first-come-first-served basis for Tufts University permit holders. Possible future enhancements may include the ability for electric vehicle drivers to reserve spaces using a parking management system app.

“We’re really pleased to be able to offer additional electric vehicle charging stations on the Medford campus. Not only is this a positive step toward promoting more green methods of transportation, but the carport fits squarely within Tufts’ overall commitment to environmental sustainability,” said Jason McClellan, senior director of Tufts University Auxiliary Services.

This pilot program, offered in partnership with iSun Energy, will generate energy measured by a separate meter, and excess power produced will be distributed to the grid. “By partnering with iSun and our electricity utility, the solar carport joins Tufts other solar projects in helping the Commonwealth reach its goal of net zero emissions by 2050, as required under the new comprehensive climate change legislation signed into law by Governor Baker in March, 2021,” said Tina Woolston, director of the Office of Sustainability. “This in turn, helps Tufts reach its own goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.”

Solar Ambassador Program

Fellowship Description

Are you a college student passionate about renewable energy? Are you interested in taking action to put up solar in your community? If the opportunity to install a solar energy system on a nonprofit or cooperative near you sounds exciting, then RE-volv wants to help you make it happen.

The Solar Ambassador Program is a fellowship for one academic year that gives college students the opportunity to spearhead a solar project in their community using RE-volv’s innovative solar financing model. We are looking for creative, passionate, and resourceful college students who are eager to spread solar across the country.

 Deadline: February  17th, 2017

Requirements

•The team is comprised of at least 3 college students who will still be enrolled the following year
•The team completes a Team Application
•The team identifies a local nonprofit organization or worker-owned cooperative that wants to go solar through RE-volv

•The organization completes a Project Application

The teams and organizations who are most poised for success will be formally welcomed into the fellowship.

Benefits

During the academic year, RE-volv will help teams bring their solar projects to fruition. To facilitate this, each team will select one Project Lead who will be invited to an all-expense-paid Solar Ambassador Leadership Summit held in July or August in the San Francisco Bay Area. This summit will train Project Leads on solar finance and policy, crowdfunding, event planning, communications, and community engagement – all the skills needed to complete their proposed project! Every Solar Ambassador will also be provided with exclusive resources and campaign materials.

During the academic year, all team members will participate in biweekly webinars with RE-volv staff and special guests from leading environmental organizations and solar companies. Topics range from renewable energy to environmental justice, and these webinars will serve as discussion rooms for fellow Solar Ambassadors to share ideas. All Solar Ambassadors will also receive close mentoring and guidance from RE-volv staff.

Campaign Organizer, Impact, (Various Locations)

Our mission is to create the grassroots action, energy and power it takes to make an impact on important issues. We’re working on national campaigns to reduce global warming pollution, restore Clean Water Act protections to America’s streams, expand solar power across the country, end the overuse of antibiotics on factory farms, and counter the influence of Super PACs and billionaires over our elections.

Your campaign assignment will depend in part on where you applied to work and what issue we can make the biggest difference on in that state. For example, you might build the coalition that convinces a wavering senator in your state to vote the right way on crucial Clean Water Act protections. Or you could organize the news event that convinces the governor in your state that “going big on solar” is an opportunity to be a hero with the public.

The target annual compensation for this position is $25,500 in the first year and $27,000 in the second year. Impact offers a competitive benefits package. We also offer an excellent training program and opportunities for advancement.

Global Warming Campus Internship, Environment Massachusetts

Application deadline: September 30, 2015

“Global warming is happening and we’re seeing the effects all around us — from  dangerous heat waves and droughts to last winter’s snowstorms. And scientists warn it could get much worse unless we act soon.

“The good news: we have the solutions. Solar power is taking off, and we’re beginning to harvest energy from the winds off our shores.

“But powerful interests, including utility companies and the fossil fuel industry, are threatening to stop clean energy in its tracks.

“We’re looking for smart, hard-working students to build the people power it will take to repower Massachusetts with clean energy. Interns will work 4-7 hours per week from campus.”
