TEACH WITH TUPIT

TUPIT faculty span more than 20 departments at Tufts, as well as Harvard University, MIT, Bunker Hill Community College, and Wellesley College. While faculty from outside institutions are welcome to apply, priority is given to Tufts faculty. Our instructors consistently describe teaching with TUPIT as a deeply meaningful and transformative experience.

TUPIT provides a comprehensive orientation, and faculty gain access to resources on trauma-informed pedagogy and restorative justice practices. Faculty are encouraged to bring their strengths into the classroom while embracing anti-racist, student-centered approaches, and experience differentiating instruction. In partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Correction, faculty must also follow guidelines on student and staff privacy and media relations and may not use students’ prison experiences in any public or published forum.

Faculty interested in teaching with TUPIT are invited to begin by completing the interest form. Once submitted, TUPIT administration will reach out to schedule an initial meeting to discuss requirements, course possibilities, preparation timelines, and how your expertise aligns with our curriculum.

Please note, all TUPIT courses are planned one to three years in advance for both our degree programs inside prison and the MyTERN program.

Teaching in TUPIT has been incredibly rewarding, both personally and professionally.
Not only have I been personally inspired by the students’ desire to educate themselves, but my own teaching on campus has transformed as a result of this teaching experience.

MENTOR A TUFTS STUDENT

Tufts partners with Partakers College Behind Bars mentoring program to bridge the divide between people inside and outside of prison. Mentors provide support and encouragement that are critical to success in college. They also model positive relationships that extend beyond the classroom. Mentors teams (four mentors per students) visit monthly and lend subject area expertise to a student, but they are not tutors and there are no academic prerequisites. The time commitment is very flexible. To learn more about becoming a mentor, fill out the interest form.
