CDC Wonder – Single point access to a wide variety of reports and public health data

Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care

Project that tracks distribution of medical resources in the US – includes reports and data (mostly tabular, but can be linked to Hospital Service Areas and Hospital Referral Regions.

Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS)

DHS analyzes and distributes survey results regarding health, nutrition, HIV for over 75 countries. See the DHS GIS Overview page for online mapping and GIS-friendly data download/requests.

Health Resources and Services Administration

US Department of Health and Human Services – HRSA Geospatial Data Clearinghouse.  From the web site:

  • HRSA awarded grant data, including grantee names, contacts, awarded amounts by fiscal year
  • HRSA supported health care service delivery sites, including Health Centers, Ryan White CARE Act Ambulatory/Outpatient Medical care sites, National Health Service Corps clinician sites, and Nursing Education Loan Repayment sites
  • Health Professional Shortage Areas
  • Medically Underserved Areas and Populations
  • Hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and other Medicare-approved providers
  • 2000 U.S. population data from the U.S. Census and 2004 population data from Claritas
  • Births and infant deaths
  • Geographic data including census tracts, congressional districts, counties, States, roads, bodies of water

The HRSA has an ArcIMS Server: ims.hrsa.gov, Service Name: HGDW_Mapping You can download the GIS data for the above data sets by following the directions on the Online Mapping Services page (http://datawarehouse.hrsa.gov/data/dataServices/arcCatalogConnection.aspx) – click on the instructions listed for ArcCatalog on this page. After going through these instructions, you should be viewing the HRSA data in ArcMap. At that point you can right-click on any of the data layers and export the data layer to a shape file on your local computer.

MassChip (Massachusetts Community Information Profile, Department of Public Health)

Access and query tabular data for Massachusetts at various geographic levels, including town, county, school district, and for the Boston area, urban neighborhoods. No GIS data, but the tabular data can be linked to existing GIS administrative boundary data sets.

World Health Organization (WHO) Global Health Observatory Map Gallery

Includes an extensive list of maps on major health topics. Maps are classified by themes as below, and can be further searched by keyword.  Also see the WHO GeoNetwork (http://www.who.int/geonetwork/srv/en/main.search) for downloadable data set.
