TUSDM Student Global Exchange Program with the University of Monterrey Mexico

TUSDM Student Global Exchange program, under the leadership of Dr. John Morgan and Dr. Cynthia Yered, is dedicated to providing valuable educational experiences for dental students with a global perspective. Through considerable efforts, planning, and collaborations, the program was reinstated last year following a hiatus during COVID-19. This program is a comprehensive approach to fostering a well-rounded understanding of oral health education and practices. Visiting dental students and faculty observe in pre-doctoral and postdoctoral programs, attend lectures, and interact with students and faculty. By exposing participants to different educational settings and facilitating interactions with diverse individuals within the field, the program aims to contribute to the development of global leaders in oral health.

Most recently, TUSDM hosted four dental students, accompanied by their academic director, Dr. Chapa, from the University of Monterrey Mexico for a two-week period. Students were welcomed into Advanced Education in Esthetic Dentistry, the Craniofacial Pain Center, the Postgraduate Endodontic department, the Postgraduate Periodontics department, the Pre-doctoral clinic, and the Emergency Dental clinic. In addition to dentistry, much was learned about similarities and differences in dental education, the oral health care system and culture.

It was wonderful to hear the positive feedback from the students who participated in the TUSDM Student Global Exchange program. Their endorsement, with all four students expressing a willingness to highly recommend the program to their peers, is a strong testament to the program’s success and the beneficial experience it offers. The students’ comments showcase some of the program’s strengths,

“[I enjoyed] everything, meeting the doctors, students and learning about procedures. It was amazing! You get to learn a lot of things and you feel part of the school. Also, everyone is so nice and gentle.”

“Having the opportunity of meeting other students and have them tell me about their experience at Tufts University was quite enriching.”

“[I enjoyed] everything! Small things like taking the train every morning and walking to Tufts, to rotations in postgraduate and learning how to treat patients. Boston is an incredible city and the people at Tufts are so nice.”

“Being at Tufts University helped me to see and realize how badly I want to study in the USA. I got to see and compare the differences between many cultures and international dental students that this university has.”

Thank you to all faculty, staff, and students who contributed to the success of this visit, especially Dean Karimbux, Ms. Zhanea Nicholson, Dr. Amato, Dr. Correa, Dr. Leader, Dr. Molina Rojas, Dr. Mordini, Dr. Sarmiento, Dr. Trombly, Ms. Gillian Anzivino, Mr. Joseph Cimmino and Ms. Mona Patel.

The TUSDM Student Global Exchange Program is looking forward to welcoming students from Tokyo Dental College, Taipei Medical University, Cardiff University, and others in the new year.
