HSDA: Chelsea OHI Afterschool
On September 17th, as part of HSDA (Hispanic Student Dental Association) week, Community engagement Co-Chairs Erika Magaña D25 and Yesenia Reys D26 planned an OHI presentation at the Chelsea afterschool program. Alongside fellow TUSDM members Jeancarlos Ferman D25, and Luiciana Gonzalez IS D25. Where they engaged with about 30 students from 2nd to 3rd grade, using interactive games to educate them on key dental health topics. One of the highlights was the Jeopardy board they used, which captured the students’ attention and encouraged them to learn new facts about oral hygiene in a fun and competitive manner. Their excitement and eagerness to answer questions demonstrated just how effective this approach was.
In addition to the Jeopardy game, they taught the students the proper way to brush their teeth, which they were eager to practice. Discussed the importance of health food and snacks, how often they should be going to the Dentist and many other things. Seeing them actively engage and absorb the information was incredibly rewarding. It was clear that they left with valuable knowledge on how to take care of their teeth.
“This event was not only beneficial for the students but also for us as presenters. It reinforced the power of interactive teaching, especially for younger audiences, and highlighted the importance of community outreach as part of HSDA week. This experience showed the impact we can make by reaching out to communities early on to instill lifelong healthy habits.” – Erika Magaña
