Kress Interpretive Fellow

Job Summary:
The Kress Interpretive Fellow at Honolulu Museum of Art will contribute to in-depth research on the museum’s European and Arts of the Philippines collections, with a focus on identifying and describing connections between these two areas of the museum’s collections. S/he shall help to increase the museum’s capacity for education and outreach by developing programming that increases access to underserved groups in the community; by integrating interactive, hands-on teaching approaches to tours, curricula, and didactic materials; by contributing to docent and teacher training programs; and by teaching in the galleries. The Fellow shall also foster connections and broaden access to the collections among the local Filipino, Catholic, and museum communities.

This is a full time, temporary position with benefits; the salary is $30,000. There are no relocation expenses provided.
Date: August 1, 2015 – July 30, 2016 one year temporary position.

Minimum qualifications:

• B.A. in art history, art education, studio art, or museum studies
• Interest in graduate study or professional placement in the above or related fields
• Research experience
• Experience working with audiences of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds

Desired qualifications:

• M.A. or Ph.D.
• Knowledge or working experience in video technology

Essential duties:

• Perform scholarly research on the European and Arts of the Philippines collections;
• Determine and describe connections, relationships and continuities between Honolulu Museum of Art’s European and Philippine collection in general, and in specific works;
• Identify Italian Renaissance and Baroque paintings that engage biblical themes and narratives that resonate with the largely Catholic Filipino population in Hawaii;
• Develop interpretive materials for the museum’s permanent collections of European and Philippines art, which may include supporting text for works on display in the galleries, online content, brochures and/or other material;
• Develop programming to increase museum capacity for education and outreach in European Art and Arts of the Philippines;
• Integrate hands-on and engaging approaches for school tours curricula and didactic materials;
• Contribute to docent and teacher training programs;
• Help to create educational videos such as docent training videos, Smarthistory or TED-Ed videos;
• Teach in the galleries or lecture in Doris Duke Theatre;
• Assists with visitor engagement; and
• Establish relationships with relevant constituencies (Filipino Community Center, Catholic Churches and organizations, Title 1 schools, University of Hawai‘i, etc.).
• Work closely with a collaborative team of curators, educators, and administrators, including the Curator of European and American Art, Curator of Asian Art, Director of Communications, and Teacher Liaison

Working conditions and atmosphere:
This position works collaboratively with education and curatorial as well as community leaders. Regular office hours are required. Due to the nature of the responsibilities, evening and weekend work may be necessary.
