Description

The Chief Curator of Military History is responsible for managing the curatorial staff and support staff in the acquisition, documentation, and interpretation of artifacts related to North Carolina and American history, and specifically as Military Curator for artifacts associated with the military heritage of the state.  Managerial responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the direction of curatorial staff toward acquisition, documentation, cataloging, research, and scholarly interpretation of the museum’s collection and associated materials including photography, film, and music to interpret North Carolina history in exhibitions, publications, educational programs and presentations, and in the distance learning and social media activities.  Responsibilities also include managing the section budget and serving on the museum leadership team to define strategic and annual plans and budgetary priorities.  As curator of military history, responsibilities include specific work to collect, document, and interpret the military collection of the museum and other related military collections accessible and utilized by the museum in exhibitions, educational programs and publications.

Requirements

The Chief Curator must have considerable knowledge of American, Southern, North Carolina, and military history; comprehensive knowledge of curatorial ethics, principles, theory, and techniques; comprehensive knowledge of historical and material culture studies, military history, primary and  Secondary historical research, and the documentation of military collections toward the development of exhibition outlines, storylines, label text, and lists of appropriate artifacts, photographs, and audio-visual materials; excellent writing and verbal abilities and interpersonal skills; ability to direct, manage and evaluate the work of staff, volunteers and interns; ability to establish and manage budgets; ability to lead in museum strategic and annual planning; ability to review and evaluate exhibition, programming, publications, and marketing materials; ability to establish and maintain positive collaborative working relationships with peers, support staff, volunteers, supporters, and the public; ability to work within and support an institutional environment and to professionally represent the museum in public programs and functions; ability to travel on museum business and work flexible hours including occasional weekends.

Master’s degree in museum studies, education, history, public history, architectural history, design or related area specific to program supervised and five years of experience in museum or related cultural institution work which includes three years in a supervisory or managerial capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Management prefers candidates with a Ph.D in American history with a concentration in military studies and extensive museum experience in management and in working with military collections and in the development of exhibitions, publications, and presentations; ten years of progressively responsible museum experience, including management and supervisory experience and practical work with related military collections, and past military service.
