Description
The Tampa Museum of Art invites applications for an Exhibitions and Collections Manager. This is a full-time permanent position, available beginning February 1, 2016.
ROLE and RESPONSIBILITIES
The Exhibitions and Collections Manager will report directly to the Chief Curator, who also serves as Richard E. Perry Curator of Greek and Roman Art. S/he will be a vital member of the small but dynamic curatorial team, working closely with the Chief Curator as well as the Curator of Contemporary Art and the Chief Preparator/Exhibition Designer. This role requires precise attention to detail, strong communication and analytical skills, as well as the abilities to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to work collaboratively and diplomatically.
Primary responsibilities will relate to both the permanent collection and traveling exhibitions, including (but not limited to) the following:
- Under direction of Chief Curator, provide general oversight for care of Museum’s diverse collection of over 7,000 objects as well as its library and archive.
- Administer all collections care and management documentation for permanent, incoming, and outgoing artworks; more specifically
- manage exhibition contracts and loan agreements;
- prepare and implement loan documentation and facility reports;
- arrange domestic/international transit, insurance coverage, and courier travel;
- coordinate movement and handling of artwork and crates; and
- issue object receipts and condition reports.
- Maintain collections database and documentation (digital and paper files) as well as department archive.
- Work with Chief Curator to prepare exhibition and operating budgets.
- Participate in development of Museum’s annual exhibition calendar and scheduling of all aspects of exhibition changeovers.
- Assist in development of exhibition content and research on permanent collection.
- Oversee documentary photography of exhibitions and individual artworks.
- Perform routine collections inventories and condition surveys.
- Obtain bids, then select and coordinate all fine arts shipping services.
- Obtain bids, and process all documents related to fine arts insurance.
- Coordinate collections care and management training and disaster plan preparation.
Additional responsibilities include the following:
- Collaborate with Development, Education, and Curatorial staffs to implement exhibition-related programming.
- Edit exhibition content as well as press and marketing materials.
- Process reproduction rights and image-use requests.
- Provide departmental administrative support as needed.
- Monitor and document building conditions in collaboration with Facilities Manager.
- Implement Museum-wide policies/procedures as related to curatorial department.
- Conduct research for special projects and other duties as assigned.

COLLECTION OVERVIEW
The Tampa Museum of Art’s permanent collection is at the heart of its mission to “gather, study, discuss, and present the finest visual arts for a curious public.” The collection (totaling more than 7000 artworks) falls into three general categories:
- Classical Antiquities (approximately 660 works);
- Nineteenth-Century Prints and Photographs (approximately 1,300, mostly views of archaeological sites and classical antiquities in European museums);
- Modern and Contemporary Art (more than 5,000 artworks), including
- The C. Paul Jennewein Archive (approximately 2,600 artworks);
- nearly 1000 20th-century photographs;
- nearly 1000 works on paper (prints, watercolors, and drawings);
- some 350 paintings, mostly produced after 1950;
- some 350 works of decorative arts and sculpture
- seven (7) “new media” artworks.
Requirements
REQUIREMENTS
- BA in art history, museum studies, or other related fieldrequired (MA preferred), with knowledge of classical, modern, and contemporary art\
- Five years’ experience working in a museum or gallery exhibition/collections position
- Proficiency in FileMaker Pro and MS Office applications required (Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator preferred)
- Flexibility to travel and/or work extended hours as needed
- Ability to handle artwork and work manually as needed
