The American Social History Project/Center for Media and Learning (ASHP/CML) (ashp.cuny.edu) seeks a resourceful, self-motivated, highly collaborative educator with a strong academic background in U.S. history to help develop and maintain its history education programs and digital initiatives.

Based at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York, ASHP/CML is one of the oldest public history projects in the country. Along with producing innovative textbooks, documentaries, and digital projects, ASHP/CML provides professional development programs that help teachers in New York City and across the nation to use the latest social history scholarship, active learning methods, and technology in their classrooms.

Duties

  • Help to administer ASHP/CML’s online professional development website Who Built America Badges for History Education (badges.ashp.cuny.edu) by providing coaching and feedback to participating teachers, developing curriculum and other site materials, and promoting the site to teachers and administrators nationwide
  • Work with outside partners to develop and refine lessons and professional development materials for Zoom In, a suite of online tools and model lessons designed to support middle school social studies teachers in aligning their teaching to the Common Core Standards
  • Participate in outreach, program planning, and implementation for future professional development projects with the New York City Department of Education
  • Assist in developing and fundraising for new digital projects
  • Participate in staff-wide meetings and activities as required

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (M.A. or Ph.D.) in history or social studies education
  • Teaching experience at the 5-12, community college, or college level
  • Experience developing 5-12 history curriculum and/or professional development for social studies teachers preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills

Terms

  • Full time (35 hours/week) beginning May 2014
  • Salary range $48,000-$53,000 with health insurance, vacation, sick leave, and major holidays
