The San Jose Museum of Art (SJMA) is the primary art museum in the South Bay. Located on the central city park in downtown San Jose, in the hub of Silicon Valley, the Museum is housed in a landmark 1892 building (a gem of Richardsonian architecture and once the Civic Library) and a 1991 addition by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, connected by a towering, light-filled atrium. SJMA has a total of 17,000 square feet of gallery space, as well as the Museum Store and a café. It serves audiences from across the Peninsula as well as visitors from the greater Bay Area. SJMA’s special exhibitions focus on modern and contemporary art. The exhibition program is fresh and imaginative, international in scope, and as diverse as the region in which it is located. The Museum is widely recognized around the country as a stellar showcase for California artists. Exhibitions may examine: the interface of art and new technologies; themes of current interest to the general public; or the master artists of our time. Artists often create new special projects for presentation at SJMA. The museum operates with: a budget of approximately $4.2 million; a full and part-time staff of 60; and a 20-member Board of Trustees.
