Director of Visitor Experience [Carnegie Museum of Natural History]

Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania is embarking on an exciting reorganization of the way it goes about its work and engages with the public. We have posted a position that would be one of three leadership positions in framing the public experience at the museum.

The (Asst./Assoc.) Curator or Director of Visitor Experience provides key leadership for all visitor experiences in the public spaces of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. As a senior member of the Center for Lifelong Science Learning’s management team, this position is responsible for shaping new directions for visitor experiences, defining programmatic approaches, identifying funding strategies and designing engaging roles for adult and teen docent programs. New initiatives align with the museum’s strategic goal to provide relevant experiences grounded in the core research and collections of the institution, with special attention to strategies that make the content physically, socially and intellectually available for a wide range of public audiences, including groups, families, students and adults who visit the museum. Uses of mobile technologies and social networking to enhance the
visitor’s learning experience before, during and after a visit are of great interest.

Requirements: Organized, flexible with excellent leadership skills; knowledge in communicating natural history topics to public audiences; ability to evaluate program implementation and provide professional development support to a wide range of staff.

For Director:
-A MS or PhD in a scientific field or field related to the research and collections of the museum, preferred
– Three years professional experience in management of informal learning experiences; facilitation of professional development experiences; program partnerships; program management of budgets and reporting;
-Experience in the development of funding proposals and development and implementation of resulting activities.
-Three years experience managing youth and adult staff and associated program operations, especially with under-represented audiences (African American, Hispanic, Native American, young people from low-income backgrounds, girls, and people with disabilities).
-Evaluation or design based research with a history of publication in academic or professional journals.

For Curator
-The option for a curator title requires a PhD in learning science or education and an agenda for related research.
-Research history, with publications in academic journals.
– Informal Science Experiences similar to those described above.

Various Positions [West End Museum]

The West End Museum (150 Staniford Street, Boston, MA 02114) is  seeking aspiring curators: administrative assistant, exhibit planners,  development officers, marketing/pr and archive specialists  to intern.  We are looking for pre-professionals, students, recent graduates, and  people willing to gain experience in a particular career field of the  museum business. We recognize that student internships also supplement  academic classes and, in some cases, earn college credit, which we are  willing to consent to.

The West End Museum offers visitors a unique look into important periods of our city’s history. The Museum was established in 1990 and has been in its current Lomasney Way location since 2002 in what was once the heart of Boston’s Old West End. The West End Museum is one of Boston’s few neighborhood museums. Through its ongoing exhibit, The ‘Last Tenement’, visitors are transported back to the immigrant era of the 19th and 20th century. The West End, which was fondly called “the greatest neighborhood this side of heaven,” was demolished in the late 1950’s to allow for Urban Renewal. The new neighborhood, which stretches from the Bulfinch Triangle in front of TD Boston Garden to Cambridge   Street at the foot of Beacon  Hill, bears little resemblance to the narrow, crowded streets that were home to hundreds of thousands of immigrant families for over 100 years. The Museum is dedicated to the collection, preservation and interpretation of the history.

The West End neighborhood dates back to the founding of Boston in 1630 by William Blackstone when it was known as ‘The New Field’.  Two former West Enders, Charles Bulfinch and Harrison Gray Otis were directly responsible for the development of early Downtown Boston.  Boston’s hospital industry, transportation industry and entertainment industry all had their beginnings in the West End. The West End Museum tells this story.
