Asssistant Director [Lincoln Heritage Museum]

*Lincoln College is seeking an Assistant Director for the Lincoln Heritage Museum one of central Illinois’s greatest tourist attractions and repositories of Lincoln collections. Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal skills in working with the public; be willing to plan and implement special events; be able to use computer technology; and undertake grant writing. Strong knowledge of Abraham Lincoln history is desirable. Bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree preferred. Salary commensurate with education and experience.

*         The Assistant Director reports directly to the Museum Director. Responsibilities of the position include:
*         Assist in arranging and conducting tours of the Lincoln Heritage Museum to visitors of all ages. This includes coordination of school group tours and children’s activities, as well as adult group tours, ensuring the utmost museum visitor experience.
*         Help plan and execute special events, projects, and temporary exhibits. This includes research, preparation and accumulation of items and resources, and arranging necessary contacts and logistical arrangements.
*         Assist with oversight, management, and creative design input for the new museum project. Recruit a museum staff volunteer base, including training of docents and volunteers.
*         Continue the cataloguing of our entire collection, including the proper handling of items, historical research on pieces, and appropriate labeling of items according to museum standards.
*         Devise and implement marketing plans, including brochures and tourism initiatives, and booking of tours, both within our museum and in conjunction with regional tourism.
*         Assist in developing, planning, and facilitating of our annual summer seminar for teachers at the museum, including presenting sessions, materials preparation, and assisting in arrangements.
*         Utilize general computer technology requisite to networking and general correspondence, exhibit display and enhancement, promotions of the museum, research, maintenance of our PastPerfect software program, and tracking of newsletter subscriptions and renewals.
*         Conduct grant identification and grant writing, and contact individuals or parties for fundraising ventures when requested or approved by the director.
*         Take a leading role in organizing with the Soiree Committee our annual Soiree fundraiser.
*         Attend and represent the museum at local or national events, conferences, or meetings when necessary, or when requested to in proxy of the director.
*         Provide some off-campus presentations when available, or when requested by the director.
*         Organize both broad-based and exhibit-specific local educational and community partnerships.
*         Develop articles for /The Lincoln Newsletter/, including those on major Lincoln activities and on new scholarship, and articles relating directly to the museum.
*         Assume mail, e-mail, or phone correspondence in absence of or when requested by the director.
*         Handle general maintenance of the gift shop items including the ordering and sales of souvenirs and books, fulfillment of special orders, familiarization with credit card and other related customer services. Daily care of overall maintenance appearance, including stocking of brochures.

Art Handler [Worcester Historical Museum]

ART HANDLER: Historical Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts seeks to fill the
position of temporary Art Handler, responsible for the transport and care of its collection.
This is a temporary, short-tem, non-benefited position. Qualifications: Reporting to the
Curator, the Art Handler will work primarily on transferring potentially fragile works of art
and archival materials from space to space in perfect condition, including meticulously
disassembling and packaging pieces, securing them safely, unloading, carrying the
pieces to their destination, maintaining inventory and re-housing objects. Candidates
must have the ability to lift overhead and/or carry artifacts, exhibit cases, supplies, and
boxes weighing 25 pounds. This position requires climbing ladders, walking up and
down stairs and handling a variety of fragile and delicate art objects including sculpture,
paintings, decorative arts, rare books, photography, and textiles. Ideally, the candidate
will have some prior museum collections care and packing experience and basic
knowledge of computer databases. Excellent organizational and communication skills,
ability to work as part of a team, and attention to detail are a must. Pay range: $17.00
to 20.00/hour dependening on experience. Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:30
a.m. – 4:00 p.m. with some flexibility. Work Period: Late May, 2011 through the end of

STUDIO EDUCATOR
ISABELLA STEWART GARDNER MUSEUM
TITLE:   Studio Educator
DEPARTMENT: Education
REPORTS TO:  Director of Community Programs
TYPE OF POSITION: Part-time /30 hours per week; hourly/non-exempt
Regular schedule includes Saturdays and Sundays, school vacation weeks, and third Thursday evening of each month

Scope of Position
The Studio Educator plans and implements studio projects to engage general visitors (adults and children) in the creative process. By experimenting with art materials, visitors will learn about art past and present and make their own connections to art in the museum’s collection and special exhibitions. Making use of the museum’s new studio space — currently scheduled to be open to the public on weekends and during school vacation weeks — the Studio Educator will develop drop-in
projects for both children and adults, and will prepare self-guided materials linking studio projects to the art or architecture of the historic building or to a current special exhibition.

The Studio Educator will work closely with the Director of Community Programs on school vacation weeks and other community-based programs (Neighborhood Nights, Open Our Doors Day, Frank Hatch Day). In addition, the Studio Educator will collaborate with other education staff to develop projects for a variety of events, including Gardner After Hours, volunteer training, and teacher workshops.

Responsibilities
* Develop year-long schedule of studio-based projects for families and general visitors
* Develop and design gallery materials to accompany projects when necessary
* Work with curatorial departments and artists-in-residence to develop projects based on the museum’s buildings, collection, and special exhibitions
* Create assessment tools to help gauge the success of the programs
* Develop appropriate staffing plan using volunteers and interns
* Collaborate with other staff on family gallery materials
* Create an engaging and lively atmosphere during studio open hours
* Be a welcoming and friendly presence in the studio while guiding activities for visitors
* Along with other education staff, help maintain the studio space, keeping it organized and accessible

Qualifications
* B.F.A. in studio art or related field; M.A. or M.F.A. preferred
* Experience teaching adults and children; experience with VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) a plus
* 2-5 years experience creating studio projects connected to museum collections
* Excellent planning and organizational skills
* Ability to work collaboratively with other museum staff and contemporary artists
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Ability to produce simple yet imaginative gallery materials
* Experience managing volunteer and intern staff

*   Track record of creating detailed plans for major projects, and implementing them on schedule and on budget.
*   Experience handling a variety of museum art and decorative-art objects, including glass.
*   A commitment to the care and preservation of collections and to welcoming the public to use and enjoy the collections.
*   Fresh knowledge on current best practices.
*   Budgeting and financial experience and acumen to manage a departmental or institutional budget of $2.5 to $5 million annually.
*   M.A. in Art History or related field.  Broad knowledge of and love for art.
*   Computer skills, including collections databases and 3-D design programs (CAD/CAM).
