Decorative Arts Trust Internship at Old Sturbridge Village

Old Sturbridge Village, New England’s largest living history museum, in conjunction with the Decorative Arts Trust, is seeking to employ a full-time, one-year curatorial intern. The intern will work with the museum’s curatorial staff in the study, care and exhibition of artifacts from the museum’s important collection of 60,000 early American objects. Duties will include developing and installing collections-based exhibits and assisting with a survey of components of the collection as part of an overall collections plan. The intern may also help catalog museum objects and manage collections records. Working within a large living history museum, the intern will have the opportunity to participate in collections-based public programs. The intern will work collaboratively with and on the same schedule as the collections staff and report to the Curator of Decorative Arts.

This is a full-time position for one year, starting sometime between June 1 and August 15, 2012,
depending on the availability of the intern. The stipend for the position is $25,000, with 10 paid
holidays, 1 week paid vacation and up to one week paid time for professional development and
conferences. The position otherwise includes no benefits.

Qualifications:
This position is open to new museum professionals who have received or will receive a graduate degree in museum studies, American material culture, art history, public history, or history (or related fields) between May 1, 2011 and June 1, 2012. Candidates are required to have training in and direct experience with collections management, including artifact records management, object handling, research and documentation. Knowledge of American decorative arts, especially New England materials dating from 1790 to 1840, is essential. Experience as a museum interpreter and involvement in exhibition development are preferred. Proficiency in standard computer programs such as Word and an understanding of collections- management databases are important.
