A member of the education department at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Tour Programs Manager is responsible for supporting and strengthening the tour program, focusing as a priority on experiences for adults. This position is a senior staff member of the education department and works closely with a docent program manager, a tour scheduler, and over 200 volunteer docents.

• Manages all aspects of the Gallery Talk program, the MFAH daily, scheduled drop-in tour opportunity
o Develops relevant and engaging topics that focus on collections and exhibitions
o Ensures Gallery Talks are promoted, internally and externally o Assesses and evaluates program, making recommendations for improvement

• Manages specialized tours opportunities for adults, including:
o Members Tours, regularly scheduled opportunities for MFAH members
o Looking Together, a program for adults with early stages of Alzheimers
o Art Beyond Sight, a program for adults with visual impairments

• Works with MFAH docents to ensure they are comfortable and confident leading tours for adults
o Provides education sessions for docents that focus on both content and pedagogy
o Available to work with docents indivudually or in small groups

• Supports inter-departmental programs that include a guided-tour component; works closely with Group Sales Manager and Tour Scheduler on group tours

• Conceptualizes and designs new opportunities for adults that focus on in-gallery learning

• Monitors overall quality of tours for adults through evaluation systems, education sessions, and work with public

• Works with curatorial and education department to ensure accurate content and information about collections and exhibitions

• Develops programs and systems that seek to build new audiences including acting as liaison to community and public groups and working collaboratively with internal museum departments

With Docent Program Manager:
• Develops docent education sessions and study materials; provides assistance and information to the museum docents about collections and exhibitions

• Assists Education Director in preparation of grant proposals and reports and implementation of grant-funded projects

• As a senior member of the education department, works with team to develop programmatic and interpretive plan for department, presents tours and workshops at education department meetings and other education department programs

Job Requirements

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

• Proficient gallery teacher; excellent public speaking skills

• Strong knowledge of art history

• Excellent management and interpersonal skills

• Familiar with current education theories and trends

• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously

• Ability to work evenings and weekends as program schedule requires


Education and Experience:

• MA., M.Ed., or MAT in art education, art history, or related field

• 3-5 years experience in museum education

• Demonstrated management and administrative abilities

• Experience teaching from works of art
