The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (MCA) seeks a Beatrice C. Mayer Director of Education who is charged with the leadership, strategy and direction for all the MCA’s education and related outreach activities by defining and creating programs important to the museum’s mission and exemplary in the field. The Director will develop a plan to put the MCA at the forefront of the contemporary museum field in terms of lifelong learning approaches and visitor engagement; manage day-to-day department operations including budget, personnel, and quarterly Education Committee meetings; foster relationships with trustees, volunteers, and key figures in the field; conceive and implement programs that will attract broader and more diverse audiences to the MCA and help secure funding toward that end; and work collaboratively with other departments to build cross-departmental educational programming that addresses multiple audiences and multiple learning styles.
Master’s degree in art history, education, the humanities or related field is required. Minimum seven to ten years education experience with at least 2-3 years at senior management level, background in twentieth century/contemporary art, and experience working in a museum strongly preferred. Visibility and stature in the visual arts education community a plus. Demonstrated leadership, staff management, and strategic planning skills and a proven record in developing and implementing high quality, innovative programs for various audiences from school age to general and specialist adult. Proven ability to generate funds. Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills required. Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm with weekends and evenings as needed to oversee education programs and participate in other museum activities.
