Curator of Western American Art [Buffalo Bill Center of the West]

The Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming, invites applications for the Curator of Western American Art position.  The Center’s western art collection is exhibited in the Whitney Western Art Museum and in the other four museums that comprise the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.

The Center’s Collection includes original paintings, sculptures, and prints that trace artistic interpretations of the West from the early nineteenth century to today. Artists featured include George Catlin, Alfred Jacob Miller, Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, Alexander Phimister Proctor, William R. Leigh, Joseph Henry Sharp, N.C. Wyeth, and many others.

The collection also includes contemporary western art. Harry Jackson, James Bama, Deborah Butterfield, and Fritz Scholder are represented with many other artists of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

The Margaret and Dick Scarlett Curator of Western American Art leads curatorial activities and programs for American Western Art at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. This individual builds reputation for the Center and the Whitney Western Art Museum through creative exhibition and outreach, scholarship and cultivation of supporters.The Curator directs operations, research, exhibitions, care and maintenance of the Western Art collections.

The successful candidate will hold at least a Master’s degree in Art History with emphasis on Western Art preferred. A Ph.D. in Art History is preferred.
