The Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH), founded in 1920, is located in the heart of University Circle, five miles east of downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Considered among the top 10 institutions of its kind in North America, the Museum offers an incredible visitor experience, attracting roughly 275,000 visitors a year. There are more than 140 public education programs and over 80,000 students served annually. CMNH employs about 160 people.

The Museum has currently launched a capital campaign to support a dramatic renovation and expansion of its facilities and exhibits. This ambitious plan will position the Museum to play a leading role in regional and national efforts to improve science education and increase scientific literacy.

Summary: The Director of Marketing is responsible for development, administration and implementation of the Museum’s strategic marketing efforts that include: advertising, brand stewardship, graphic presentation, promotional events, group and educational tour sales, website and market research.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with our without reasonable accommodation)
Plan and direct advertising and promotional campaigns for the Museum’s major exhibits, lecture series, traveling exhibits, key programs and special events.
Establish and implement strategic and tactical marketing plans.
Directly manage the work of the graphic design team as well as external contractors, such as advertising agencies and website development firms.
Serve as the Museum’s creative director, planning and directing the creative concepts and graphic design of printed publications and online communications.
Write advertising and promotional copy.
Plan and conduct market research to create a repository of market and visitor intelligence that can inform decisions across the Museum as well as in the planning and implementation of marketing and communications. Analyze and present analysis of the research to staff across the Museum.
Create media plans and execute media buys across a variety of media sources in the support of advertising plans.
Work closely with the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer to develop the Museum’s brand platform and then steward and curate the brand across all communications. Work with all departments of the Museum in maintaining brand integrity both externally and internally.
Supervise outside contractor on the development and maintenance of the Museum’s website as well as update it directly and oversee the quality and timeliness of other staff’s updates to it.
Manage the advertising and promotional budget for the Museum.
Plan and execute marketing and promotions that drive group tour sales as well as support the Education Division’s educational tour and distance learning sales.
Job Requirements
Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Marketing or Communications, and six plus years related job experience in marketing or advertising.
Agency or client service firm experience a plus.
Experience working with website content management systems and with popular social media platforms.
Other Qualifications:
Proficient knowledge of Microsoft office products to include Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Demonstrated ability to understand an audience/industry and provide thought leadership.
A passion for science, nature and conservation.
Ability to work with an interdisciplinary professional team.
Excellent organizational, analytical and problem solving skills.
Exceptional knowledge of marketing strategies, concepts and practices.
Ability to exercise initiative and good judgment in anticipating problems before they arise.
Ability to effectively coordinate and track multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize, work well under pressure with a high degree of accuracy, and meet stringent and overlapping deadlines.
Demonstrated knowledge of writing clearly and informatively with a high level of sophistication and can vary writing styles to meet needs.
Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include evenings and weekends.
Ability to be an outstanding ambassador to the Museum.
