The Curator of Anthropology reports to the Director of Curatorial Affairs and Public Programs at Gilcrease Museum. The Curator is expected to conduct scholarly research, write for academic and general audiences, and work as part of a team to develop exhibitions from concept to installation. The Curator of Anthropology is responsible for the general care of the museum’s anthropological collections, including storage, maintenance, record keeping, database development and coordinating NAGPRA requests. The curator, occasionally, will teach a course in the Museum Science and Management program and/or the Anthropology department at The University of Tulsa.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES:

  • In collaboration with the Director of Curatorial Affairs, assists in the facilitation of research by visiting scholars and the processing of information requests,
  • Curates temporary, permanent, and  traveling exhibitions,
  • Conducts scholarly research and publishes in museum and other professional venues,
  • Works with the Registrar’s office to document and catalog archeological or anthropological materials in the TMS database system,
  • Maintains the NAGPRA files, submits reports, and communicates with tribal governments and federal agencies with regards to NAGPRA issues; keeps the Museum’s senior staff and Registrar’s office informed of all NAGPRA-related activity,
  • Develops long and short term goals for the Anthropology department including updating departmental policy guidelines in accordance with AAM standards,
  • Identifies, classifies, and catalogues objects in the anthropology collection,
  • Works with the Registrar and Conservator to monitor the physical condition and transfer of items in the anthropology collection while in the museum; identify conservation needs, and monitor the storage area to ensure the collection is secure and the climate is within environmental guidelines,
  • Conducts and maintains periodic physical inventory of the anthropology collection,
  • Assists in the packing and receiving of collection objects as requested,
  • Provides education programming assistance as needed for the Education Department; participates in public lectures, forums, and media programs as requested,
  • Serves as the museum’s spokesperson on anthropological and archaeological subjects; interacts with donors, board members, and University of Tulsa staff on matters related to the anthropology collections,
  • Oversees the volunteers and interns working in the anthropological collections,
  • Responds to public and professional inquiries about anthropological and other collection related items,
  • Provides VIP tours as requested,
  • Participates in the preparation of and writes grant applications supporting the care and interpretation of the anthropology collection,
  • Teaches appropriate courses in the Museum Science and Management program and/or the Anthropology department at The University of Tulsa,
  • Participates as a member of staff committees as required,
  • Assists with any other additional duties which may be requested.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in archaeology or anthropology; specialization and geographic focus are open. At least two years’ experience as a museum curator. Demonstrated ability to work as a team member in developing significant exhibitions. Must be willing to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses. The ability to effectively supervise volunteers and interns, ability to evaluate museum artifacts as to condition, authenticity, origination, and value; ability to evaluate conservation needs of the collection; ability to write comprehensive technical reports and articles; ability to speak effectively to large and small groups of people.  The successful candidate will help guide and articulate the museum’s role as a community and university resource, will help build relationships with the diverse Oklahoma Native American communities, and will be an effective spokesperson and ambassador for the department. Knowledge of the American Alliance of Museums best practices for the care and maintenance of collections expected.Proficiency in PC or Mac software applications, including Word, Excel, Visio, and Outlook expected.

 

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. degree from an accredited college or university in archaeology or anthropology; specialization and geographic focus are open. The doctorate must be complete prior to the beginning of the academic year in August 2015. Experience with The Museum Systems (TMS) and digital photography. Completion of the Department of the Interior NAGPRA training program. Demonstrated success in obtaining grants and experience in integrating technology into teaching and research.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.; occasionally, evening or weekend duties are required.
